If one has an initial invested capital of $200k bought into the shares of Keppel Corp in year 2001 and held on until now, the person will have a total sum of 1 million dollars over a period of 8 years, since the total returns is at least 400% (excluding dividends collected) over this period.

Consider this:- If those that bought at $1 plus range for this stock since year 2001 and still held on now at $5 plus range at year 2009. The % returns is around 400% per share price appreciation. Take this 400% and divide by 8 years, that will be a whopping 50% returns every year on the intitial capital sum. This is not factoring in the dividends collected yet. If factoring in total dividends collected, the % return per year will be more than 50%. I don't know whether got anyone can deliver such consistent returns in their investments at more than 50% every year for at least 8 years. The idea here is in selecting the right company to invest long term to maximise one's total returns throught the years. Of course, one has to buy at the right price so that one consistently pays undervalued price for the business.

A large number of shares bought in an excellent business at undervalued price and held on for a long time can make one really rich. This is because the earnings of the business keeps on improving and the worth of the shares will also keep on increasing through the years. Of course, there are many ways to play the market. I'm sure some traders can also deliver such results.

Let's hope it can maintain it's financial performance so far or do even better. This is a good company. The return on equity has been consistently good, in the 20% range. It's not easy for a large conglomerate managing a few types of businesses together to deliver such consistent results. It's share price since year 2001 has increased from $1 plus range to now $5 plus range. If one is still holding on to Keppel's shares from year 2001 and haven't sold off, one maybe still seeing good times ahead as long as this company can continue to expand and deliver good results. It's intrinsic value is around $4 plus range, so no matter what it is lucrative for one that has bought during year 2001 to still hold onto this company's shares for the long term as long as it is still performing. The intrinsic value of the shares may continue to increase further through the years. Also the total dividends this company gives out will make those that bought at it's intitial low price years back and still held on, laugh all the way through the years. This is what I call investing long term in the business of a good company and time will reward the patient long term investor heavily.

read this....wonder how that "forecast" will affect Kepcorp...this evening's kepland qtr result will be interesting... :D

btw...notice the language used by CEO,Kepcorp ...is Kepcorp big or small player? ..quite yaya hor?

skally more oil rig cancellation...haha

....."The oil price today affects small players and marginal fields," said Choo Chiau Beng, CEO of the world's largest offshore oil rig builder Keppel Corp (KPLM.SI), which has seen oil rig order cancellations and said it faces a challenging year.

Oil rigs sector to see consolidation as rates fall

* Jack up rig rates expected to see sharp decline

* Prosafe Production: a shake-out would see stronger players

SINGAPORE, April 22 (Reuters) - The oil rig sector is likely to see consolidation as rates for renting out drilling rigs are falling along with weaker oil prices, industry experts said on Wednesday. "We're going to see tremendous consolidation -- there's going to be three to four strong players that will dominate," said Per Didrik Leivdal, Chief Executive Officer of Pareto Securities Asia, a Norwegian financial services firm.

"I think jack up rig rates will face a significant decline in the next 6-12 months," he told an industry conference in Singapore. "There's a lot of idle capacity," he said, adding some firms had bought rigs at high prices of over $250 million on a highly leveraged basis.

He picked Rowan (RDC.N) and Transocean (RIG.N), the world's largest offshore oil drilling contractor, as firms that could swallow up minor players that were coming under pressure from the weaker rates and a pullback in drilling of marginal oil fields.

Oil prices CLc1 have slid under $50 a barrel, down nearly $100 from a record high hit last year, as the global economic slowdown cuts fuel demand.

"The oil price today affects small players and marginal fields," said Choo Chiau Beng, CEO of the world's largest offshore oil rig builder Keppel Corp (KPLM.SI), which has seen oil rig order cancellations and said it faces a challenging year.

Norwegian offshore driller Prosafe Production (PRODP.OL) said a shake-out in the industry would lead to stronger players better able to deal with bigger and more complex projects, as oil exploration moves to tougher environments such as deepwater.

"For us to take on a $1 billion project alone requires us to take on too much risk," said Sven Borre Larsen, CFO of Prosafe Production. "We need to build larger entities to fill the demand from the industry." (Reporting by Neil Chatterjee; Editing by Dhara Ranasinghe)

Keppel Corp wins S$300m worth of new marine projects
By Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 30 March 2009 1411 hrs

SINGAPORE: Singapore's Keppel Corp said Monday its units have won three new projects worth a total S$300 million.
Keppel Offshore & Marine's Keppel Shipyard secured two projects with existing customers to construct a barge and modify another vessel.

The third project is to complete a deep drilling semisubmersible. This was awarded to Keppel Fels Brasil by a new customer, Dutch firm Noble Drilling.

These contracts are not expected to have a material impact on Keppel's earnings this financial year.

However, they will provide a welcome boost to the group's order book during these tough economic times.

The only way to make good money is to invest for a long term...

To be a good investor, one must be a trader, a long-term trader...

I mean, what's the point of holding a stock forever and ever until the cows come home?... Smiley

There is no reason why it should go up, regardless how good or bad the Co' is, until a few months ago every time you read the money section of ST they seem to mention KC & a picture of oil rigs jump to  peoples mind, now rigs are coming off contracts & beginning to get laid up (stacked is the slang) you think parking a car is expensive ? drilling contractors will try to get these to work before they place orders for something 18 -24 months delivery.
