DJ MARKET TALK: Kim Eng Ups SingTel Target To S$3.35 From S$3.17
  • 13 July 2009 10:28

  •

0228 GMT [Dow Jones] STOCK CALL: Kim Eng Securities raises SingTel's (Z74.SG) sum-of-parts target price to S$3.35 from S$3.17 to reflect latest values of telco's listed associates. Says AUD, IDR continued to strengthen vs SGD in recent months, potentially boosting SingTel's fiscal 1Q10 results (likely due in August), as Optus and Telkomsel account for about 15%, 18% of SingTel's pretax profit respectively. Notes fast take-up for SingTel's recent launch of latest iPhone 3G handset, with customers "still clamoring to place orders even after the pre-ordering closed." Expects SingTel to maintain FY10 EBITDA margin guidance of 36%-38%, "which we reckon has already considered the new iPhone, and there may be upside if the economy improves further, unless content costs run out of control." Keeps Buy call. Stock off 1.3% at S$3.12; STI down 1.0%. (FKH)

DJ MARKET TALK: SingTel +2.4%; Earnings Prospects Better - BoA-ML
  • 07 July 2009 11:22

  •

0322 GMT [Dow Jones] SingTel (Z74.SG) +2.4% at S$2.99, faring tad better than most other blue chips (STI +0.8%), although interest tame based on light volume. Recent performance largely in line with broader market - down 2.7% since beginning July, down 3.0% since start of June vs STI's respective 2.9%, 2.7% falls over same periods - as stock not touted to outperform given low beta, lack of immediate catalysts as investors still awaiting pickup in business following management's guidance in May for slower earnings growth due to FX volatility, weaker economic conditions. Still, Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, which has Buy call, says earnings prospects better now as growth momentum in telco's core markets steady, with higher margins expected from Australian unit Optus; "we like SingTel for its dominance in Singapore and improving subscriber market share of Optus." Raises target price to S$3.33 from S$3.08 after increasing fiscal FY10-12 earnings forecasts by 6%-7%. If stock manages to clear S$3.00, next resistance at year-to-date high of S$3.09. SingTel - Upgrade to Buy: Many Moving Pieces Coming Together

Many moving pieces coming together — (1) 13%/10% EPS growth in FY10E/11E appears respectable vs. telco peers. (2) Low expectations given modest FY09 and sedate FY10 company guidance – we see upside risk in delivery. (3) Improving associates – Telkomsel on industry repair, Bharti/MTN a longer-term opportunity? (4) A reasonable valuation case. (5) Macro/political trends bode well for favourable currency movements (A$, INR, IDR). Based on these factors we upgrade our rating to Buy (from Hold), lower the risk rating to Low (from Medium) and revise our target price to S$3.30 (from S$2.70).

Singapore and Australia: Building up for longer term gain — Consistent revenue share gain in Singapore has come with EBITDA stability but margin cost. Higher scale/lower aggression could drive growth but are not in current expectations. Little growth in Optus is largely in expectations but we view nothing is reflected for NBN opportunities/mobile consolidation – potential longer term positives.

Associates: Sound growth — We see associate contributions rising 20%/23% in FY10E/11E as Telkomsel regains growth momentum into a healing wireless industry in Indonesia. A potential Bharti/MTN combination could bode well for LT value/earnings accretion, we would see more involvement as a LT positive.

Valuation/Currency trends in favor, estimates revised up — 1) P/E discount to market highest in a long time, 2) 4% discount to spot SOTP compares with a LT premium of 8.4%, 3) Stub at 10.4x P/E and 5.7x EV/EBITDA vs. LT mean of 12.4x and 6.7x respectively, 4) Currency trends in favor with 5% strength in A$, INR, IDR could add 4/5/2 cents to SOTP. 5) FY10E-11E EPS estimates up 3%-4% on stronger A$ and higher Telkomsel profits.

Risks — M&A overpayment seen as primary risk. Bharti/MTN deal progression could see short term weakness, presenting entry opportunities, in our view.

  • 0832 GMT [Dow Jones] STOCK CALL: RBS downgrades Singapore Telecom (Z74.SG) to Hold from Buy, trims target price to S$3.04 from S$3.08. Says shares no longer compelling after recent gains, "at current prices, we no longer find the value and yield propositions attractive." Broker says company to see pressure in domestic market due to next generation national broadband network (NGBBN). Says SingTel faces more risks from new network than other Singapore telcos as is currently dominant operator. "We expect the NGBBN rollout to reduce revenue contribution from the domestic broadband, fixed-line and data segments as competition intensifies." Though adds overall impact should be somewhat muted by company's diversified portfolio, which has reduced reliance on domestic market. Shares down 2.0% at S$2.94. (KIG)

0342 GMT [Dow Jones] STOCK CALL: DBS Vickers raises SingTel (Z74.SG) target price to S$3.22 from S$3.05 to assume higher contributions from associates amid business rebound for Telkomsel of Indonesia, rising currencies of countries where telco operates. Notes AUD, IDR +10%-15% vs SGD in last 3 months. Raises Telkomsel's FY10 pretax profit forecast by over 10% on back of healthier revenue, margins; "pricing in Indonesia has started to recover in late 2008, following its downtrend due to an aggressive price war in 2007-2008." Adds SingTel can reap S$1.5 billion if it sells Optus fixed-line assets to Australian government in return for stake in country's national broadband network, another S$6 billion-S$8 billion if it relists Optus. Keeps Buy call. Stock off 1.7% at S$2.97. (FKH)
