Par value is different from Net asset value although initially at the start of business registration, they might be the same.
The par value is the initial value that the company originally issued the shares at. Over time, the NAV or NTA (which are roughly the same) changes with the financials of the company, but the Par Value remains the same. Par value can change if the company wants to do so but the NTA/NAV must also " be changed" accordingly, as in the case of Contel.
Usually when new shares are issued, they will use the NTA as a guide to the value of the shares. The company shareholders will lose out if the issued shares are lower priced than the NTA, so normally it does not happen unless they issue shares to buy assets which may be underpriced that in order to match the underpricing they issued shares and receive lesser " book money" for it, like in the case of Albedo.
When new shares are issued and the amount of money are received according to the NAV or NTA, the difference between the par value and the Nav (or NTA) are known as the share premium and this is normally credited and shown in the share premium account.   The opposite is the share discount.
So in reality, Par value is out of date and means nothing, with fast changing business and book keeping methods.   But because old habits die hard, par value is still in use by some companies.

Par value does not mean placements or whatever transfer has to be at that value. It is just there for accounting sake. Now, let your fingers do some work. Click till the older pages to see the comments |

Anyone here please advise on this:   The Directors propose to increase the authorised share capital of the Company from the  existing HK$600,000,000 to HK$1,500,000,000 with a par value of HK$0.10 each by the  creation of an additional 9,000,000,000 ordinary shares in the capital of the Company  (?Shares?), to cater to any future issue of Shares or convertible securities as and when it  arises. Any issue of Shares or convertible securities would be subject to any prevailing  regulations and the Listing Manual, and where necessary, approval of the shareholders of the
Company (?Shareholders?) would be sought in a general meeting.

9 billion upcoming shares at HK$0.10! does this mean shareholders will get to subscribe them, or if it's placed to big investors? That's only 1.6 cents in SGD!   14 billion total shares in the future...like mdr ltd...the dilution is overwhelming

what i m worried about is hankore can be expanding too fast with the issuance of debt notes, and now more shares to raise cash. acquisition is good but also risky. have to make sure that the increase in profits and assets from the acquisitions more than cover the dilution and interest rates.
