I was at their AGM last year. The explanation from the chairman was his percentage of shareholding had risen during the financial crisis due to rights issue and additional purchases. So he was reducing to the normal percentage. Anyway he had stopped selling for sometime.

My own view is the CEO needs to engage the investment community better.  Market has been suspicious of Popular's foray into the property segment (questioning whether it is out of its core competence) and the media / book market is highly competitive.  Having said, the financials now look very interesting and I will tend to concur downside should (big caveat here) be limited versus potential gain.  What is untimely though for Popular is being a sub 20 cents stock, the ridiculous $0.001  bid size introduced by SGX curtails trading interest. With limited interest means limited liquidity driven partially by limited analyst coverage, which would be unfortunate for Popular.  Perhaps Popular can consider share consolidation if management recognises they are highly undervalued by the market.  Still for long term value investors, they can study Popular's financials in-depth and determine if there is a value play here. Good luck to holders.

It pay div regularly ard 5 to 6%, better than SMRT, or some  blue chips, and 16c  the px can only and likely go one way, that is up.

it got 0.10c cash per share at the latest report and  nav 0.2268c. total 0.3268 selling for 0.16c. .

very cheap, and it is almost recession proof and with a shrew CEO Chou CN, you can sleep in peace.

BTW, has anyone have an estimate how much their retail properties are worth?  THeir annual report says $27+ m based on last valuation.  When was valuation done? I really don't know.  But i have a hunch it could possibly be understated?

Popular Holdings posts half-year net profit of $246m
WRITTEN BY THE EDGE
FRIDAY, 10 DECEMBER 2010 21:27

Popular Holdings says it posted a net profit of $9.8 million on turnover of $245.6 million for for the half year ended 31 October 2010 (HY2011). In view of the performance for HY2011, the group is declaring an interim dividend of 0.4 cents.

Popular’s retail and distribution business recorded an increase in turnover from $192.0 million in HY2010 to $202.5 million in HY2011, mainly contributed by organic growth.

The 5.5% increase in turnover as well as closure of certain non-profit generating stores boosted the PBT of this division by 63.8% from $4.7 million in HY2010 to $7.7 million in HY2011. A record high turnout at BookFest@Malaysia held in September 2010 also contributed to the stellar performance of this division.

Despite stiff competition in the Hong Kong market, Popular says turnover and profit before tax for the publishing and e-learning division remains stable at $33 million and $6.5 million respectively.

To bring more synergy to the e-Learning business, the group increased its stake in its associated company, Active & Independent Education Limited, in Hong Kong from 25.2% to 51.01%.

In addition, the group invested in 22% shareholdings in Computer Training & Consultancy (ACP) in November.

The property development division achieved revenue of $10.3 million from the sale of 3 units in the group’s second project "18 Shelford” in HY2011. For the same period last year, the group recognised $41.4 million sales revenue and $7.7 million in profit before tax from the group’s maiden project One Robin.

The group’s third project, 8 Raja, was launched in October 2010 and construction is expected to commence in early 2011.
