From today's Straits Times: "There have been concerns that the shuttle services were making it too convenient for heartlanders to go to the IR to gamble."

Mama, you are right.

They should also remove all 4D/Toto/Football/Formula 1 betting outlets near our shooping malls/markets/etc. It's too convenient for everyone (not just heartlanders) to gamble.

Since I can affort $100, transport charges is not an issue.  If I want to visit casino, I will still go regardless of any free transport or not.  To me, free transport to Sentosa is a benefit for Singaporean, especially the retirees who can spend time with grandchildren visiting Sentosa or with their retired buddies.   With more people roaming at Sentosa is good right and the drivers can keep their jobs.  If they worry about gambling, I think the Singapore Pools are located too near and convenient  at all housing estates.  So are we going to shift the Singapore Pools to some ulu place??  I am not well-educated, just a retiree, I hope someone who can write well, please write to the press hoping the authority will review the free transport to Sentosa.

Raise levy, nOt stOp free buses

Why deprive non-gambling patrons?

Letter from Quek Soo Beng

ONE of the Government’s rationales for granting licences to the two gaming operators was that they would build integrated resorts where the majority of amenities and services would be non-gaming in nature.

For example, Resorts World Sentosa has the Universal Studios theme park, numerous shops and food outlets.

Aren’t the IRs multiple-service destinations?

So why the hang-up about Singaporeans enjoying the free shuttle bus services?

It was reported that the majority of bus passengers surveyed were heading not to the casinos but the other amenities within, and even without, the IRs.

The shuttle bus is an excellent customer service.

It seems illogical to contend that the prospect of saving a couple of dollars in bus fare would induce a significant number of people to patronise the casinos considering that a hefty $100 entry fee is still payable. If more gamblers do use the bus service, the pertinent question then is whether the entry levy is high enough.

Gamblers intent on getting to the casino will do so, free shuttle bus or not.

Why then deprive the non-gambling majority of the transport privileges just because some think it is politically correct to “appease” public opinion?

But who exactly is the prohibition of shuttle bus services appeasing?

Surely not the IR customers or people enjoying the free rides to and from the city.

The authorities should not interfere with FREE enterprise efforts to enhance customer service. It is good news if more shopping malls, cinemas, clubs and restaurants start to provide similar complimentary services.

This wOn’t stOp gamblers

Letter from Raymund Koh Joo Guan

I REFER to “RWS withdraws heartland shuttle buses” (Sept 10). There are those who claim the free shuttle service will lure gamblers to the gaming tables. How naive.

The fact that Singaporeans are already paying $100 for a return trip to Genting Highlands is an example of how far gamblers will go.

Do the authorities think that gamblers will not go to the casinos without the shuttle service?

If I were one, I would just take a taxi there. There would be no need to wait for the bus or to look for parking space.

The free shuttle not only brings business  to the integrated resorts, it also caters to poorer families [SMRT bus fare UNaffOrdable] and reduces congestion at the Sentosa Gateway.

If only the authorities can think like you that the resorts is not just Casino!  I think better to remove the atm's at the entrance to the casinos!

I doubt if the IR or casino will be severely affected. Universal Studios will still be the attraction for youngsters although they may have to cough up a bit more to donate to our public transport companies for their enjoyment.

It's the other attractions at Sentosa that will feel the loss without this free transport, as it was in the past.

Gamblers have not been deterred by FREE stuff. Before the IRs came to existence, ppl still make their way to the harbour for their cruises and to Batam, right?

So this whole issues of scrapping the free transport affects MANY others than just those few uncles and aunties. It's like throwing away the whole basket for transporting eggs just because there was a rotten or cracked egg in it. They could have just alight the passengers at the IR, away from the casino.

So the question now the authorities have to decide is if it is alright for the passengers to alight/board just before the entrance/exit of the IRs. Note: Resort is not just casino, there are MANY others who want to enjoy the other attractions.

Happy belated Hari Raya. :)

This can be solved!!  If compromised.

Pick up and drop off point  a  bit  farther  away from the  CASINO and those who are not going to casino, drop outside near the universal studios.

Singaporean parents  dont want their kids to go Casino, yet, they want to take FREE private bus transport and bring their kids to Universal studios and drop off point is very near to the  CASINO!!!!  ?????   The big word  CASINO  can be seen veryy clearly  from the drop off and pick up point.

Why must provide FREE transport to those who want to go and enjoy the outings in RWS?

Previously, there isnt any transport to  places of interests eg. Zoo, jurong bird park etc......

To encourage more  ppl to go these places of interests, the only solutions is :   Reduce the entrance fee .
