SINGAPORE: Conglomerate Sembcorp Industries' full-year net profit fell 3.6 per cent to S$507 million.

This was due mainly to lower contributions from its overseas units and weaker foreign currencies against the Singapore dollar.

Revenue for 2008 rose 15 per cent to S$9.9 billion.

In the fourth quarter, Sembcorp's net profits fell 33.6 per cent to some S$101 million.

This was largely because of an exceptional loss booked by its marine unit to cover unauthorised forex transactions by a finance director from the marine division in late 2007.

Sembcorp said it intends to recover the amount from Societe Generale, maintaining its position that the transactions were not valid.

Revenue for the three months ended December rose 6.6 per cent to S$2.7 billion.

Sembcorp's utilities division saw lower net profit contribution, thanks to the weakening of the British pound, and tighter margins from its United Kingdom market.

Group president and CEO of Sembcorp Industries, Tang Kin Fei, said: "Both our utilities and marine business had grown well. The utilities business increased its revenue by 20 per cent because of higher HSFO price. And our marine business had done very well, increasing revenue by 12 per cent."

Its marine arm added the most to the firm's profitability, contributing some S$291 million in profit, up 32 per cent from last year. This was a result of higher rig building margins, though they were offset by the weaker performance of Sembcorp's Cosco Shipyard Group.

For the year ahead, Sembcorp said business conditions will not be easy, with the global economic slowdown and tightening credit markets.

But it believes it can weather the difficult times through cost management and productivity improvements.

Mr Tang said: "Sembcorp's business strategy is to focus on businesses that give us stable and recurring income. This has served us well in the boom years, as well as in this difficult period. Our businesses are resilient."

Backed by healthy operating cash flows, Sembcorp said it is well-placed to capitalise on opportunities that may arise.

The firm is proposing a final dividend of 11 cents for the year.

The past 2 days gap ups worry me...

Gaps must be filled and recently, they tend to fill up quite quickly.

Might be a case of "Buy on Rumours, sell on news"

It got 58.4% in rig building, offshore n conversion 23.3%, repair 16.6% shipbuilding 0.1% n others 1.6%.

Now, marine fears of cancellation of order of building new ships or rigs. Ships owner rather to

prolong life of ships for maintenace n repair. Henceforth, ship building will be kena hit n ship maintenace agencies will get boost.

Stay away from ship n rigs building could be a much viable tot. AK view only.
