SPH, .Singpost,   for example"

Thanks. I already have those stocks and you are absolutely right, they are much safer than SMRT.

Dividend is not as good as before but still the best among the three transportation companies (SBS and ComfortDelgo). Maintenance costs expected to increase as the company aims to raise its service level rating.

Well, if they maintain the dividends, the price will stabilise.

If they continue to cut dividends, then the price will drop.

I also expect the fare will increase. Hope this will help SMRT share price.

contrarian view.......... before long , this gp of analyst will start saying its time to buy SMRT as our population is going up to 7 million by 2030,hence higher ridership. Soon the govt will also justify the 1 to 2 cents price increase in fare. Secondly  this poorer result from Smrt will also help to soothe the angry nerve of all commuters and give the image that SMRT is very responsible and is prepared to do all it can to ensure commuter satisfaction, even with poorer coy income.........  don`t forget it is a case of 羊 毛 出 在 羊 身 上 , soon we`ll have to pay higher fees.

Shares of SMRT Corp Ltd fell to a five-month low after the Singapore transport operator reported a 31 per cent fall in third-quarter net profit and brokers warned that its earnings could be dragged further by higher expenses.

DBS Vickers expects SMRT's earnings to worsen and cut its earnings estimates by 16 per cent for the company's 2013 fiscal year and by 25 per cent for 2014. DBS reduced its target price to S$1.30 from S$1.50 and kept its 'fully valued' rating

For long term investors of SMRT, this is my 2 cents worth:

SMRT just released their 3rd  quarter  results and they say that their profitability will  deteriorate  due to higher operating costs.Staff costs for the Train and Bus operations are expected to significantly increase due to increased headcounts and market wage adjustments.  Maintenance  for train operations will increase due to enlarged train fleet and continuing to improve the  reliability  of the aging fleet and rail network.

I personally do not think it is a good choice to acquire any amount of SMRT shares due to their increased operational costs and their lack of visible growth plans or investments for the company. On top of the high operational costs, they are incurring more debts in order to pay dividends to their shareholders. Despite the rapid expansion of the MRT network in Singapore, these railway networks will likely incur costs to maintain. As  reliability is the key to their  operations, long term returns will not be sustainable, especially if they continue to pay dividends to the shareholders in the expense of debt.

SMRT Corp's net profit for the third quarter ended Dec 31, 2012 slumped 31.2 per cent to S$25.5 million despite a 5 per cent rise in revenue to S$281.7 million.

The rail operator, which also operates buses and taxis, blamed higher operating expenses and significantly higher bus losses for the drop in profit.

It said group revenue had increased mainly on higher train and bus ridership, contribution from the full operation of the Circle Line, and higher taxi and rental revenue.

Earnings per share in the quarter were 1.7 cents, down from 2.4 cents in the year-ago period. No dividends were declared.
