Successful Co award  will need to spend billions rolling out networks across a country that has yet to pass a law to govern the sector and where opaque, state-owned enterprises will remain players.

The process is being watched closely as a test case for reform in Myanmar although the risks did not stop 90 international firms and groups from joining ths early stage,  in it  initial phase.

A  one hint, hinted that something is not fortright coming....??. guess Myanmar is not ready for...or ready  to roll out and want a free ride??.

As a  result of that recommendation which came from Myo Swe, secretary of the telecoms committee and a lawmaker representing Tamu town in Sagaing Division, lawmakers in the lower house agreed to postpone announcing the winners of the tender.

“In some cases, we need to prioritize national interests,” Phyo Min Thein, a lawmaker from the National League for Democracy (NLD) party, told The Irrawaddy. “Today nobody objected to the statement on the telecoms tender. Neither did I.”

Phyo Min Thein said all 401 lawmakers at Wednesday’s Parliament session approved the emergency statement and urged the Union government to implement it.

teeth53 thot - Laws is not pass n may take many months to proceed, just look at their oil n gas play, then again TelCo Industries is unlike oil n gas, oil n gas can be depleted).

It the same thinking (for their national interest).

" The decision to postpone the awards was made after a member of Parliament’s telecoms committee submitted an emergency statement to lawmakers urging them to favor local joint ventures in the selection of telecoms operators."

Does this statement mean that KDDI, Singtel, Digicel consortiums are favourites?

Telnor and Singtel, two of the 11 international telecoms companies bidding for two licenses to operate in Burma, have started recruiting employees ahead of a planned announcement of the winners on June 27. According to the Economic Times of India, Nortel’s “move is seen as a reflection of the top Scandinavian mobile operator’s ‘confidence’ in bagging one of the two mobile licenses.” Meanwhile, Channel News Asia reports that SingTel “aims to hire 1,000 local employees in the first year of operations” if it wins a license. Among the other contenders are India’s Bharti Airtel, Digicel, Qatar Telecom, France Telecom and South Africa-based MTN.
