FOLLOWING the recent murder of Republic Polytechnic (RP) student Darren Ng, who was reportedly stabbed following a staring incident on Halloween, a Facebook group was started, named “Why students of Republic Polytechnic keep on dying?” (sic).
Last I checked, there were 2,013 members, with the number growing quickly.
A photo of Darren is currently being used as the profile photo of the page. But instead of words of comfort, some of the comments are downright repulsive.
Shockingly, some people actually “like” such comments, rather than flagging them as inappropriate.
In addition, this page has become a platform for (often anonymous) members of the public to defame the school.
The Facebook group contains information such as the names of RP students who have died, as well as details on their cases.
Can anything be done about this Facebook page? Instead of feeling sympathetic about the sad situation, netizens seem to be treating it as a joke.
I hope the public will be sensitive to the feelings of the victim’s families, as well as that of the innocent students at RP. It is really disappointing to see some people’s reactions to the incident.
I hope the Facebook page can be shut down immediately.

Minister Mentor Lee ‘intends to travel again’
Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew is frail but well, and intends to start travelling again, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said yesterday.
“The years take their toll,” PM Lee told
“He is well, he is frailer than before, he is 87 already but his mind is still all there and he has been travelling and I think he intends to travel again,” said PM Lee.
Mr Lee Kuan Yew — whose wife of 60 years, Madam Kwa Geok Choo, died last month — was briefly admitted to hospital recently for a chest infection.
Referring to the concerns by many Singaporeans about the Minister Mentor’s state of health and the possible effect it could have on Government and policy, PM Lee said: “Well, we will survive. The system has been established, the people have been put in place. There have been two changes of Prime Minister since he stepped down. There is a team — he doesn’t run the Government day-to-day.
He attends Cabinet meetings. Not every meeting, but usually. He gives us the benefit of his considerable experience and wisdom which we take very seriously.”
“But, finally, we have to decide what to do and we have to carry the message to the population. It is our challenge and soon the challenge of the next generation of leaders, who have to emerge,” the Prime Minister added.
