IBM offers glimpse into the future

Air-powered batteries, 3-D cellphones that project holographs and personalized commutes are among the predictions of IBM scientists gazing into their crystal balls.

The US computer giant this week released its annual "Next Five in Five" list of five innovations expected over the next five years.

Among the predictions are advances in transistors and battery technology that "will allow your devices to last about 10 times longer than they do today," IBM said.

Today's lithium-ion batteries could be replaced by batteries "that use the air we breathe to react with energy-dense metal, eliminating a key inhibitor to longer lasting batteries," IBM said.

"If successful, the result will be a lightweight, powerful and rechargeable battery capable of powering everything from electric cars to consumer devices.

"Better yet, in some cases, batteries may disappear altogether in smaller devices," IBM said, by reducing the amount of energy per transistor to less than 0.5 volts and relying on a technique known as "energy scavenging."

"Some wrist watches use this today -- they require no winding and charge based on the movement of your arm," IBM said. "The same concept could be used to charge mobile phones for example -- just shake and dial."

Also on the cards: 3-D and holographic cameras that fit into cellphones allowing video chat with "3-D holograms of your friends in real time."

Personalized commutes are another development seen by IBM scientists, who are already at work on using new mathematical models and predictive analytics technologies to deliver the best routes for daily travel.

"Adaptive traffic systems will intuitively learn traveler patterns and behavior to provide more dynamic travel safety and route information to travelers than is available today," IBM said.

Human beings will also increasingly become "walking sensors," IBM said, providing valuable data to "fight global warming, save endangered species or track invasive plants or animals that threaten ecosystems around the world."

"In five years, sensors in your phone, your car, your wallet and even your tweets will collect data that will give scientists a real-time picture of your environment," IBM said.

"A whole class of 'citizen scientists' will emerge, using simple sensors that already exist to create massive data sets for research," it said.

Finally, IBM said, scientists will find ways to better recycle heat and energy from data centers to "do things like heat buildings in the winter and power air conditioning in the summer."

"Up to 50 percent of the energy consumed by a modern data center goes toward air cooling," IBM said. "Most of the heat is then wasted because it is just dumped into the atmosphere.

"New technologies, such as novel on-chip water-cooling systems developed by IBM, the thermal energy from a cluster of computer processors can be efficiently recycled to provide hot water for an office or houses," it said.

IBM posted a YouTube video of the five predictions at www.youtube.com/watch?v=anKiEoxkpxM

teinhee Do We Need the HD in Mobile?
By Seow Tein Hee on 20 Dec 2010
3D displays are coming to mobile devices, but even before that, we've already seen smartphones capable of high definition video playbacks. The question is - do we, or should we, put our mobile phones through the rigorous task of playing 720p or even 1080 videos?

Top 5 destinations in South-east Asia

1. Malaysia

Clocked 23.6 million visitors last year, making it the highest-ranked South-east Asian country in the World Tourism Organisation's list of top travel destinations. Malacca, which became a World Heritage Site under Unesco in 2008, accounted for almost nine million tourists.

2. Thailand

Drew 14.1 million visitors to its shores last year, although this year's figures would be severely hit by the widespread protests and violence in the capital earlier in the year. At least 43 countries, including the United States, Britain and Australia, issued travel advisories against travelling to parts of the country.

3. Singapore

Attracted 9.7 million tourists last year despite the recession and has set an ambitious target of between 11.5 million and 12.5 million for this year. It looks set to meet its target with big events like the inaugural Youth Olympic Games and the Formula One night race. In 2008, arrivals hit an all-time high of 10.1 million.

4. Indonesia

For the biggest economy in South-east Asia, Indonesia had a relatively low visitorship of just 6.5 million last year. It has been rocked by several terrorist attacks in the last decade, although its beach resorts in Bali, Batam and Bintan are very popular with tourists.

5. Vietnam

The country's tourism figures had been rising steadily for the last decade until last year's recession coupled with a 30 per cent inflation jolted them back down to 3.7 million. Prices have since dropped and tourism figures are back on the upward trend.

Madonna is 'just a woman'

Madonna is ''just a woman'', according to her new boyfriend, French dancer Brahim Zaibat.

Madonna is 'just a woman', according to her new boyfriend.

The 'Celebration' singer started dating French dancer Brahim Zaibat just over a month ago, and the hunk insists despite her international pop star status she was not imposing, and their meeting was perfectly natural.

He explained: 'It all started on September 22 at the launch of Madonna's new ready-to-wear clothing range.

'I performed a solo to 'Material Girl'. Then I met Madonna on the sidelines, and she just thanked me for my show.

'It wasn't like meeting a monster! She's just a woman, like all the others. She's an extraordinary artist and world famous, of course, but a woman above all.

'You know she wasn't the first well known female singer I'd met. I was delighted to meet her but not stressed out.'

Some showbiz commentators have questioned the sustainability of a relationship between the 52-year-old pop superstar and Brahim, 24, since he speaks little English and is a devout Muslim, whereas Madonna speaks no French and is a strict follower of Judaism off-shoot Kabbalah.

She is also eight years older than her boyfriend's mother, but Brahim remains confident they have a future together.

When asked if he listened to the star's records, he told France's Grazia magazine: 'It wasn't the kind of sound I had on my iPod but I knew her tracks. I've since pretty much listened to all she's done.

'She's put lots of breakdance and hip-hop in her last tracks and she's passionate about dance. Her dream as a child was to become a dancer. That's another thing we have in common.'

Before Brahim, Madonna dated another 24-year-old toy boy - Brazilian model Jesus Luz.

After he was linked to the music icon, Jesus went from being a struggling model to earning $20,000 a night as a DJ and landing photo shoots for Dolce and Gabbana.

However, Brahim is not interested in the possible fame which may come his way from his relationship with the 'Hung Up' hitmaker, saying: 'I just want to get on with my life - for everything to be normal.'

The LG VL600 wireless USB modem runs on Verizon's 4G LTE network as well as its older 3G network. During our tests, it delivered speeds that consistently exceeded our home broadband connection.During my maiden test of Verizon's 4G LTE USB modem, I consistently experienced faster upload and download speeds than I get with my cable modem. It's astounding, but it won't last — when enough users pile on, these speeds will drop precipitously.

Pamelyn Chee: I’m three parts boy, one part woman

Carl Ng

In Point of Entry, both Carl and Pam share a superior-subordinate relationship, forming 'Team Epsilon' which is made up of four highly-trained special ICA agents with different specialties. Expect sparks to fly as Pam's character locks horns with her superior played by Carl, no thanks to her brash and reckless personality.

Will this be the start of a romantic love line in the story?

"Well, we're not really lovers. There is a lot of me jabbing him and him dissing me, which is part of what I think early romance is, because it's not really that obvious," Pam smiled.

According to Pam, the crew from Team Epsilon received some basic gun and operational training which taught them how to react, move, and cover one another's back in confrontational situations.

Aside from Carl's minor bruises from a boxing scene with Los Angeles actor Jourdan Lee, the team has yet to sustain any broken bones from this action-laden series - though we heard the rough factor was upped when the crew traveled to Thailand for an intensive 12-day shoot .

Shrugging off the boxing incident nonchalantly, Carl explained, "It was a little bit tough 'cos for the whole day we were boxing. You get a little bit tired; let your guard down, and all of the sudden you get hit in your face. I got hit in my face a few times though nothing too big, no big bruises or anything."

Point of Entry

Calling the actions scenes "great", Pam mused, "Actually I always feel that I'm three parts boy, one part woman. I sort of love jumping onto cars, jumping up buildings, guns, and fights."

Point of Entry debut tomorrow night on Ch 5 and airs every Thursday, Ch 5, 8pm.

Pamelyn Chee: I’m three parts boy, one part woman

Never judge Pamelyn Chee by her statuesque and slender frame, this versatile actress packs a mean punch as military sharpshooter Vivian de Cruz in Ch5 drama series, Point of Entry

Text: Joanna Goh
Video: Tay Yixuan

Pamelyn Chee

"Drop your gun! Drop your gun! Hands up!" a deep voice boomed through the creaks of the upper floor at a tapas restaurant located in Little India.

At one of the film sites for upcoming Ch 5 drama series Point of Entry, Fly Entertainment artiste Pamelyn Chee was exacting a couple of high kicks and over-the-shoulder throws with one of her co-star who was unfortunately, villain for the day.

Prior to the shoot, we were informed that the cast will be filming an "action scene" but Pam took us aback when we saw her decked in heels, body-hugging floral dress with a crystal hairclip fastened to her locks.

The 27-year-old was clearly enjoying the stunts and hand combat action as she grabbed, kicked, and elbowed her villainous co-star before us with much ease and fluidity.

When we overheard Pam's growls and the heated scuffle taking place on the second floor, her co-actor Carl Ng, pointed to the floor above and cheekily exclaimed, "That's a man upstairs!"

Point of Entry

"She's really strange. She's got a man's voice, really weird," the Eurasian lad chuckled when asked for his impression on Pam.
