I worked for both public and private sectors before. Both have pros and cons
I learned a lot more in the private sector than in the public sector and of course better pay. But stress is higher and work-life balance is screwed up.
But job security is definitely better in the public sector. That is the most important factor now for many people, I guess.

I heard even lower grade CS also affected by this pay cut. This doesn't look good, their pay already not very high, cut also not much help, only make more people suffer under recession loh. Should just cut those high salary ones lah...
I re-read the article and l take back my comments ;)

Actually, l will like to see some figures how much is cut for the top civil service? The bonus is usually divided into many components and l speculate only one component depends on the GDP (or economy guideline). If this component is a small part of the overall equation, it might not be such a big deal.
Another question is, last year overall growth is still positive. The bonus they are getting should not be that low.
Just some of my thoughts.
Yes, u r absolutely correct. If can affort why not. No retrenchment in SCSs, d employees can employ lion dance to celebrate liao. Now, hoping for no pay cut, can go for overseas tour liao. Moreover, there is no great impact as d SCS is less than 100k manforce only, as compare to the private sectors now. Diff feelings, give n take loh.

Better their pay not cut - so they can spend some and generate some economic stimulus
So retailers better off slightly
Like that , better than nothing generated if pay cut
Most of the cleaners for govt services are contracted out. Left only a few now waiting to retire. Even now the clerks are mostly contracted with only a few left to do some confidential and important documentary works. I think most govt servants with have pay cut as they have the AVC component cut.
Quite agree
Work also not easy like teaching, nursing, police, army, etc
Alot of bureucratic work to be done in short time
So far never match private sector in 6 - 12 mths bonus
When times bad, pay cut same like pte sector also
So U still want to join ?

You have missed the point. If indeed there is going to be a cut, the knife should not fall on the lowest ranks of the civil servants, eg. clerks, cleaner etc. ? How much you can cut from these people, $20...$50....? Go for the top brass and save hundred of other ranks civil servants from further hardships/belt tightening. It meant alot for lower ranks even if it is $50, esp. everything requires money for family with school going children....,,...
Don't begrudge the normal civil servants' pay. When the private firms (such as ST during HC's time)were giving 6 to12 months of bonus during good time, the civil servants were given only peanut of 1 to 2 months bonus. During good times, why didn't the public care to ask govt to give them better bonus ?
having said that, the lowest salaried workers should not suffer cuts for the simple reason that their pay increases were the smallest (if any).
Wield the knife with a deep cut at the top civil servants' salaries tosave hundred (if not thousand) from more hardships.. At most, these top civil servants put on hold their holidays plan for their family for 1-2 yrs. When economy recovers, they will recoup fast with big jumps in pay ........
I think a drop in pay is a small price to pay for the security of a government job in these turbulent times.
