Our ultimate aim in investing is to maximise profit. Thus I go for profit not dividend.

Time will tell whether investing for profits or divvy is the way to go.

Read Buffetology why Buffet feels even if company don't give dividend it may not necessarily mean a bad thing

Those who did Finance101 will know that today's share px is a reflextion of future earnings and divvy of the company.

Also the divvy payout is a reflection of the company's cash flow strength.

Frankly until I cannot quite understand why there is so much emphasis on dividend and why it should be a criteria for selecting stocks in the first place

Referring to "Parking money in stock now for dividend has no meaning..."

I think what it meant is that we are not able to rely on previous year Dividends payout as a guage, especially in the downturn, we will not know if the company can maintain the payout amount. In the example of SPC, they are able to payout handsome dividends last year as Oil price soar and they made exceptional gains, and hence exceptional dividends compared to Yr 06 and 05 perhaps. With Oil price dropping to new low daily, this may not be a good time to invest in SPC yet. The Q is what is the expected dividends, maybe good to use Yr 03 to Yr 06 average as an estimate.

However, for company to maintain good payout even in downturn, these would be good company to start investing. These are the companies that are under valuated in this downturn. We will see for the case of SPC. This will also serve as the few indicators when is the market making the U turn...for a correction to the longer Bear market.

I'm not a very active trader hence I want to park some money in counter that will give me good dividends.

I have holding power since I don't need the cash now, furthermore I run my own business hence I

won't have too much time to monitor, so I can probably hold until the next bull run.

Do you think SPC will be a good counter to park money in for dividends ?

BTW, have they announced the final dividends for the year ?

cheers
