this counter is highly speculated.... my personal view is.... some big boy is collecting.... the way they play in the range of 23 cents to 32 cents... they do not want to push up the price, but love to accumulating the shares at this stage.. that's how I feel it...

but, semicon industry? forget it... it is a dead field.

Impossible for anyone to take over this company. It seems the only way for it is to decline further. IMO only.

Hi ngchunleng,

This counter is ALREADY a penny stock. I'm studying the volume chart. It seems that BBs have already made their moves in the past few weeks and volume for this counter will start to dry up again.

When that happens, I expect the price to trade in a tight range - like in mid-Nov 2008 to early-Jan 2009

Anyone of you have any thoughts about this counter? Amid losing money trend, will this counter face liquidity issue and may need a bailout? My ultimate concern is will this counter drop till penny stock eventually?

I was thinking about buying some of this since it's quite high volume and seems to be volatile. But I guess not. Better to play safe.

They were too generous with their assessment. It looks like a 1 cent company to me.

I think you should say from 1.05 to 23cts is ouch......no matter which planet you come from.

From 23cts to 11cts, is really OK !!!  And it is only 11cts to zero.

For every dollar have already loss 80cts, is there any other losses to up the ante ??

I think the agony is the long, fruitless, slow and painful journey down the hill.

And we are not even seen the full force of the recession. Time and time again, this stock is pumped and dumped.

I am not some investment guru, but averaging is no good, to sell is about total impairment.

Trading play may be the only option left.

BTW CIMB say OUTPERFORM, OCBC say SELL and DBS say HOLD. What a spread in opinions.....

Chartered Posts Biggest Loss in Almost Seven Years (Update1) plus retrench 600 staff.

(Adds investor comment in fourth paragraph.)
    By Andrea Tan
Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) – Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd., the world’s third-largest custom-chip maker, reported its biggest loss in almost seven years and will eliminate 600 workers amid a deepening global recession.

The fourth-quarter net loss was $114 million, or 46 cents per American depositary receipt, compared with a profit of $5.9 million, or 1 cent, a year earlier, the Singapore-based company said in a statement today. That missed the $81 million median  loss estimate in a Bloomberg survey of five analysts. Sales slipped 0.3 percent to $351.7 million.

Chartered’s loss reflects the slump in electronics demand as clients including Microsoft Corp. cut costs and consumers curb spending amid the economic slowdown. The Singapore chipmaker, which has trimmed pay and fired workers to cope with falling  orders, said losses this quarter will probably widen as demand shrinks further.

“Demand’s not coming back,” Stuart O’Gorman, who helps manage $800 million in technology shares at Henderson Global Investors Ltd. in Edinburgh, said before the earnings announcement. “Most of the chipmakers are going to go out of business and it’s a  very long road.”

Chartered, which makes chips used to power Microsoft’s Xbox 360 game console, fell 4.1 percent to close at 23.5 Singapore cents yesterday.

Even in good times, Chartered performed below expectations. In times like these, I don't think we can really expect much from them.

Maybe the company would be better off merged with a bigger and more profitable rival.

Updated news.

'A quick recovery is nowhere in sight,' Chartered chief executive officer Chia Song Hwee told Reuters in a telephone interview.

He said visibility beyond the first quarter was not clear but his company had no plans currently to either shut down factories or sell facilities.
