Advance is for stocks that make a gain and decline is for stocks that make a lost on that actual trading day.

Its not just marklet volume, you got to take into account the number of advances and declines too. If the number of advances is very large in relative to the declines, plus if the trading volume is unusually large, this is usually not sustainable over a long period of time. Therefore, after a while a correction usually occurs.

Anyway, this is just my understanding or interpretation of the market.
