Singapore's SolarMorph Pte Ltd said that it has agreed to buy solar panel production equipment from Applied Materials Inc for a US$150 million plant which it plans to build in S'pore.

SolarMorph, majority-owned by Equation, said Applied Materials would deliver a fully- integrated thin-film solar panel production line next year. The automated plant, due to start production in Nov '08, would have the capacity to make 45 MW of solar panels a year, SolarMorph's founder Frank Phuan told a news briefing.

Phuan said that SolarMorph has already won a contract to supply a German firm with 20 MW of solar panels for the next 3 years.

May be you would think I am trying to make the share bullish.. but these are genuine facts, and opinion from me.

Solar Energy business is growing at rate of >40% per year. Currently, the industry is facing shortage of solar cells. There are 2 types of solar cells, Crystalline Silicon and Thin film. Thin film (what is going to be produced by Solar Morph) is becoming more popular due to simpler manufacturing process and hence cheaper.

Technology wise, I believe SolarMorph has backing from Germany Company. The founder of Solar Morph already has one local company manufacturing and selling Solar Power modules name Seaseap. It is a subsidiary company of Sunset Energietechnik from Germany. I believe the background is there and it may be related to USD120mil take off agreement mentioned in announcement.

Furthermore, the manufacturing process of thin film solar cell is very similar to semiconductor manufacturing process, which Singapore already has extensive experience. You could google and do some reading.

Looking into future, the prospect form Solar Cell is tremendous!! As I mentioned earlier the current growth rate is >40% per year and limited by shortage of Solar cells supply (thin film cell), but what is the potential of slowing down of demand and growth rate. As the installation is easier now and compatible with current electrical system, the industry (world) is expected to have more and more of solar cell, cause there is no reason not to have more as the energy from sun is free!! Current Solar Energy is only 2% of world energy consumption. I would not be able to tell you when demand would stop but just think, with the problem of oil price, global warming and others, the adoption rate of a efficient and green energy would grow tremendously.

Reason of Increasing adoption of solar Cell

Thanks to the R&D effort put by Germans (they are the biggest maker at the moment), Solar Cells are easy to install and could be integrated into Electricity Grid to house. Solar cells would generate electricity to the house and feed extra power to power grid. Some houses in US earn money from local utilities company after installing solar cell, as power generated is more than needed and supplied to other houses. In fact, founded of Solar Morph has already installed such unit in Singapore.

Someone mentioned, the current price drop is due to force sell. How does force selling work? How the system decide what price to sell?

hi, new in this forum.

Equation like having diarrhea, price sliding down..

most probably would have another news for another S$25mil investment. As of future outlook, base of industry price of Thin film module which is about USD3/watt, so revenue from SolarMorph:

2008 - USD30mil
2009 - USD120mil
2010 - USD180mil

assuming price wouldn't change.

I am still holding, not sure to let go or not....

SGX news this noon on proposed notes issue of this counter. It is a good news as pacific capital investment management is willing to pump in $35 million to equation for unsecured non interest bearing notes due in 2010. This show that during the market shake up, the investment company is confident of ths counter and the solar energy and recycle business. With the money, equation can invest in more good emerging projects.
