Biotech arm Wearnes Biotech & Medicals's (WBM) traditional Chinese medicine product HypoCol has been clinically proven in Europe to reduce blood cholesterol. WBM said the results would enable it to enter Europe's US$10b/year traditional herbal supplement market. HypolCol is made from fermented red yeast rice, whcih is supposed to cut the risk of heart disease. A study of 40 Caucasian subjects conducted by Oslo University and partly funded by Wearnes showed that HypoCol reduced total cholesterol level by 16.6%, and 'bad' cholesterol level by 24.2%. A previous clinical trial of red yeast rice in China found that it lowers cholesterol levels with no side effects and cuts risk of heart disease by 45%.
