This is to be highlighted regarding Trek's ThumbDrive patent which big companies have allegedly infringed:
### Trek has reached an out-of-court settlement with Verbatim.  Trek will receive a licensing fees ranging between 2% and 3% based
on Verbatim’s USB-flash drive sales figure, translating to an additional profit of US$1m yearly (33% of FY10 earnings).
### Following this precedent, the rest of the alleged companies (Imation Corp, IronKey, Kingston Technology, Patriot Memory, RITEK Corp and Advanced Media) will likely follow suit.
Trek should be able to whack the other 6 international companies in its ITC complaint. The fees to be collected from each of them definitely would be worth a goldmine.
TREK shares boosted by Verbatim settlement and possible settlement with others

Trek 2000 International Ltd, Trek Technology Pte. Ltd.
And S-Com System Pte. Ltd has filed a Complaint with the International
Trade Commission (ITC) against eight companies for patent infringement.

Trek 2000 International (5AB.SG) surges, +6.0% at $0.440 vs flat at
$0.415 midday after it says won ruling in US court that ThumbDrive
trademark entitled to full registration with US Patent and Trademark
Office; means Trek world’s only manufacturer that can sell flash drives
under ThumbDrive brand.
But analyst at local brokerage says knee-jerk gain may be down to
confusion over Trek’s statement; “some people may be thinking the
company will get damages based on this, but it’s not a patent (on
technology), just a trademark.”
Says decision “a paper victory at best, they’re saying it will increase
the public’s awareness of Thumbdrive, but it’s as generic as Scotch Tape
these days.”
Adds, flash drives have become commoditised, pricing now based on
supply, demand, not branding, so this news will not justify paying
premium for Trek products. Orderbook suggests limited upside beyond
$0.445.
US courts rule Trek’s ThumbDrive trademark is not generic |

Trek 2000 International, the Mainboard-listed engineering solutions provider and inventor of the ThumbDrive and FluCard, says it has won a “significant trademark victory” in the US courts. The Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the United States Patent and Trademark Office has ruled that Trek’s ThumbDrive trademark is not generic and is entitled to full registration on the Principal Register of the US Patent and Trademark Office.
This means Trek is the only manufacturer in the world that can sell the ubiquitous flash drives under the ThumbDrive brand.
Trek says CEO Henn Tan coined the mark ThumbDrive in 2000 in connection with Trek’s pioneering invention of the flash drive. In 2007, Trek applied for US registration of its ThumbDrive trademark on the Principal Register of the US Patent and Trademark Office.
However, the Trademark office refused to register ThumbDrive, arguing the mark was “generic”. Fearing that its ThumbDrive trademark would go the way of other unique and famous marks such as Aspirin, E-Mail, Zipper, and Escalator that became generic and lost all of their value, Trek took it to the US courts.

TREK 2000 is one of a rare few Singapore companies that have come up with creations that have enjoyed worldwide success and in the process created a new breed of products.
Its ThumbDrive, introduced to the world about 10 years ago, led to the demise of the floppy drive. Now it has the FluCard, potentially a world-class act.
