China; Indonesian Coal Imports By China Dramatically Rising In 2007 Since the turn of 2007 Indonesian coal imports by China have been rising by leaps and bounds. In effect, Indonesian coal imports of this country during January-February 2007 reached 2,765,000 MT with an increase of as much as 2,325,000 MT (about 6.3 times) from the same period one year ago. The imports become 16,592,000 MT on an annualized basis, up 11,426,000 MT (221.1%) from one year ago. The steep increase in Indonesia coal imports should be ascribed to soaring imports of Indonesia coal by electric power companies of this country from nearby supply source of Indonesia to meet with growing demand for coal at the domestic market of China especially to expanding imports by them of low quality coal such as semi-bituminous coal. Since later half 2006 Chinese consumers have concluded import contracts of Indonesian coal as if in competition, and Indonesian coal imports of this country will rise at an accelerated pace from now on. In consequence, in 2007 Indonesian coal imports of China may surpass 20 million MT line. (TEX Energy Report, 2nd April 2007) |
