Can. Maybe 3 room flat more affordable. Nowadays people try to withdral CPF early by buying into properties. Don't think have a chance to get it back also. Might as well make the killings in properties first. :D

HDB to stop scheme allowing siblings incl PR siblings to buy flat

14 Feb 2011 14:23

With the liberalisation of the subletting market for HDB flats over the years, unmarried Singaporean or PR siblings whose parents are residing overseas can now rent a room or a small flat from the open market.

As such, the scheme allowing this group of people to buy a HDB flat is no longer necessary and HDB will be discontinuing it with immediate effect, Grace Fu, the Senior Minister of State, Ministry of National Development & Ministry of Education, told Parliament on Monday.

Ms Fu said in 1990, HDB introduced the scheme to cater to, on a case-by-case basis, unmarried Singaporean or Permanent Resident (PR) siblings who cannot form an eligible family nucleus to buy a flat because their parents reside overseas.

'This was necessary then because the sublet market for HDB flats and rooms was limited, and there were few viable housing options for these siblings,' she explained.

Ms Fu said the number of such cases is small - there are about 300 cases each year, or less than one per cent of total flat transactions. Source: Business Times Breaking News
