that is a good idea 178... will enlarge our land to ease the "over-crowded" Singapore mainland (try MRT and you will notice how crowded is Singapore nowadays..

how nice if Singapore stock is as crowded like the influx of workers and immigrants

I recalled the x-island has many beautiful small/medium and large birds and flying fishes. In fact, many of the flying fishes landed on my big boat. It is very tasty, the japanese love to eat them too. Heard from the locals there, the sea around the island a haven for fishes. Big loss for Singapore fishermen and anglers.

Australia, a very resource-rich country already. A good friend of Singapore. On ground of good friendly ties between the two country, if our PM and entire cabinet go beg Australia to return x-island, good or not.

yes, that special crabs on the island are protected species... don't think they are edible. The army taught recruits not to eat anything that's red in color when in doubt.

yes, jobs were advertised and it attracts mainly malaysian immigrants. No entertainment venue on that island, can be boring if you like party life.

Why bring this up? Old history....

Anyway, at that time, I don't think we could militarily afford to defend 2 large islands that are seperated apart.

slight correction, Christmas island given away some 50+ years ago, not 60.

While Singapore has fought hard for decades and won the small white island rock (pedra branca), it literally gave away a much bigger island (about the size of sentosa) 60 years ago. That island was given to Singapore to administer by the British Colonialist but the Chief Minister at that time, Lim Yew Hock (not sure for what reason) gave it away to Australia.

So what big island was given away to Australia by Singapore. It's none other than Christmas Island. I had been to Christmas Island, that was 1981. It's a pretty quiet place with a population of around 2000 - 3000 people. I recalled that place had a chinese taoist temple and a mosque. Only one radio channel at that time by Radio Australia. The only industry is the manufacturing of Potash!!!

Wa! Many of you by now must have heard of the hot commodity Potash!!! yes, Christmas Island has plenty of the hot fertilizer commodity Potash. I can imagine all the manufacturing plants on that island are now pumping out tons & tons of $$$ from Potash, selling them to China and beyond.

I shared the above piece with a heavy heart. What if Singapore had kept Christmas Island? That island is so much bigger than pedra branca. Economic zone around it much bigger too. By the way, when i was enroute there by sea thru the indonesia territorial water. I saw plenty of oil/gas platforms on the high sea. So there is possibility in the economic zone around Christmas Island, there is potential oil/gas under the sea. What a huge loss to Singapore? Can you imagine what we potentially had lost, giving treasures away, literally.
