google map doesn't have details on China.  I guess China doesn't want Google to spy on them....hahahaha

Street directory has more surrounding info on their maps. It's easy to find the nearest school, daycare centre, banks, etc. from where you are. Their biggest downside is no drag function and also they like to sue which is really bad PR.

I tried the yellowpages one and looked okay.

Mike8057d and , just for fun, I entered some chinese characters (長城;天安門) in the google map and it took me all the way to Japan.

I tried streetdirectory today in the morning. I think it is up again.

But the maps seem to have some problem. Some are blank.

If you need to find Singapore street info pls try:-

http://www.map.gov.sg/StreetMap/

another map at can.com.sg:-

http://www.can.com.sg/neocan/en/mapfinder.html

or you may wish to try

http://maps.google.com/

Yellowpages is still linked to streetdirectory.com for the maps (dunno how soon will disappear):-

Alamak .... where to go for online maps now?

THE High Court on Tuesday dismissed the appeal by online map provider Virtual Map against a District Court's decision that the company had infringed the copyright of the Singapore Land Authority (SLA).

The High Court also upheld the injunction granted by the District Court prohibiting VM from reproducing SLA's street directory maps, and distributing or selling reproductions of the maps.

VM was also ordered to compensate SLA and pay its legal costs.

Actually I prefer the map.gov.sg one.

I like the fact that I can drag  the map. Better than reloading the whole page.. like how it is done in Streetdirectory.

Hey mike8057d, welcome back!

I like StreetDirectory.com as it gives travelling direction (incl est time) from one point to another.  Have not been able to find a good substitute.

Virtual Map shuts down street directory site after losing suit
Chua Hian Hou
Thu, Apr 03, 2008
The Straits Times

POPULAR online map StreetDirectory.com has shut down, after the company behind it, Virtual Map, lost its appeal against the Singapore Land Authority's (SLA) over copyright infringement last week.

The SLA, which originally issued Virtual Map a licence for its maps of Singapore, sued the company in January 2007 for continuing to use the SLA maps even after the licence had expired.

Virtual Map lost it case in the District Court, and was ordered to stop using the infringing materials. It appealed to the High Court, but lost again.

My friend paid $36K for 6 maps used on their website.  They checked the copyright statements before use.

But they amended the rules and sued my friends.

Serve them right!!! Karma

SLA  now offer FREE street directory and land Makim info. Afterall, it is taxpayer monies..
