The World Cup has become the planet's biggest gambling event, British bookmaker William Hill said. Bets have comfortably exceeded the almost $1.4 b staked on Euro 2004. The amount risked is set to smash the industry's $2.8 b barrier for the 1st time.

According to an online opinion poll conducted by market research company TNS, 42% of respondents in China, 41% in South Korea and 37% in Hong Kong also said they planned to speculate on matches.

As for S'pore, 80% of its online population is interested in the World Cup and over half expect to bet on at least one game.

So a significant portion of liquidity is channelled away from the market to football betting.

I have a different view from most people.  It seems that me that the world cup may actually help to stablise the stock market. Inagine the marker plunging almost everyday for the last 4 weeks. Once world cup start tomorrow, the focus will be shifted to WC and there will be less trading and market will drop slower. This will cool down investors panice, fears and concerns. Hopefully, by the time WC finish, the half year results of most companies can bring back some confident to the market.

Thanks tanglinboy. During the last World Cup, STI fell 12.36%. Now, the World Cup hasn't even started and STI is already down 14.38% from its record high of 2,666.33! Just imagine how much further STI can fall.

Stock will go down during world cup, right?

So, isn't it the rule to buy when market is down - not when market is going up?

I agree with Novocaine to buy now when stocks are cheap ....

Today is the eve of the World Cup which ends on July 9. Traders may switch out of trading penny stocks and bet on soccer pools instead. To get an idea of what will happen this year, let us look at what occurred during the last World Cup.

During the last World Cup in S. Korea/Japan held between May 31 and Jun 30, turnover almost halved to 5.89 bln shares worth $7.44 bln in June month-on-month. STI also fell 7.1% amid lacklustre trading conditions. In early May, STI topped at around 1740. It bottomed out at around 1525 in end-June. On match days, turnover fell below 200 mln shares worth < $300 mln - its lowest levels since the 1998 Asian financial crisis.

Prices and volumes are expected to fall during this period. I'm not expecting the volume to be as bad as last time, because of the covered warrants. We didn't have the covered warrants then. Better to stay out of the market.

haha... I think that when there are big upsets, the trading volume would get even thinner

drawing inference from Bullrun, when there are big upsets in world cup matches, share prices will drop...
