Your info on the Chinese festivals and the Winter Solstice is good, all very astronomical and thanks for the excellent pdf file on astronomical dates.... :)
But the X'mas date is more related to the astrological/astronomical date of midnight on 24th December when the constellation of Virgo is the Ascendant or apparently rising on the eastern horizon. This gives rise to the ancient symbolic 'Virgin Birth'.
The main idea is that the date of celebration of a birth is a fixed date established by the ancients, although astronomically the phenomenon of solstices is actually variable from year to year.
Can any practising astrologer comment on the Virgo Ascendant with reference to the Ephemeris?
