MM Lee says Singapore will do well in the next few years
SINGAPORE: Singapore will do well in the next few years says Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew.
But the competition is also catching up and MM Lee warned Singaporeans not to stay still but move quickly in a changing economy.
Helping to celebrate the completion of Spottiswoode Park's Lift Upgrading Programme, MM Lee says with a stable and growing Singapore economy, such improvement projects can be a reality for all estates.
But he worries that with a comfortable life, some Singaporeans may think such things come easily.
MM Lee says the real winners are those willing to change and improve with the times, especially with hungrier competition from countries like China and India hot on Singapore's heel.
He says Singaporeans must change fast to keep up or Singapore will be left behind.
And he is confident Singapore will do well in the next few years: "We will survive; this is a red dot, which we can make redder and brighter."
MM Lee also believes the Singapore government made the right decision by giving the go-ahead to have the integrated resort in Marina Bay.
Recounting his recent visit to Las Vegas, the Minister Mentor says the owner of the Venetian, Sheldon Adelson, is able to fill the hotel rooms even in the hot summer months.
"He believes the hotels will not be enough in Singapore so others will have to come up. Why has he got the confidence? Because he knows this place is stable, this place is well run and there'll be no gangsters, no pimps, no drug traffickers around the casino," he says.
It is this stability that MM Lee says Singapore can build on.
He says as Singapore changes and grows, the government is also aware of the widening gap between the rich and poor and it will keep society together by helping the needy. - CNA/ |
