In a way and sense, you are quite right in your comment and ideas.

Its a value product. It symbolized wealth   and luxury.

It can command good price in good times and when its in high demand like the Lunar new year time. 

BUT breeders, supplier of live   abalone products   are vulnerable to many factors.

If there are   little suppliers/breeders than naturally   demand vs supply is more positive, it will command   good and better prices.

BUT unfortunately for this   Oceanus, though itt looks like having good plans...huge infant abalone breeding breeding in millions................... also venture into   selling seafood in their own brand restaurants   like AhYat...... BUT things doesn't seems to work out too well.

Restaurant business not doing too well, natural disasters cause huge damages to its breeding   and facilities.   Sea contamination pollution also exposed and disrupted their operation and planning.  

Futher , there are some other big abalone suppliers and breeders giving them stiff competitions.

Overall Abalone in name sounds good. Nice to eat. BUT due to the recent happenings and its ongoing vulnerability.   Its very unpredictable and can say quite insecure as no one knows whats going to hit it next.   And many things are really beyond their control such as natural disaster. Pollution......... Product pricing.......etc etc...

Well it rally depends in which angle we are talking about that would affect it accordingly.

Pls note as of Sep 2013 report- Typhoon Usagi hit Guangdong, coastal Zhejiang and Fujian provinces in China where the majority of abalone production is sited. Some of the facilities in the Group's abalone farms that are located in Guangdong and Fujian provinces were damaged. The Hui Lai Farm, the Gu Lei Farm, the Fo Tan Farm and some abalone farming and production facilities, and to a lesser extent biological assets, were affected to some extent...

 

Prediction (Oceanus)
22 Nov- I predict that Oceanus, price at $0.017, is not cheap because its losses and macro environment will likely be losses for 2013, and moving forward with harsh abalone environment due to climatic changes. The fall below $0.016 will begins, & once started will be hard to recover. This year is not a gain season, and value will expect a fall below $0.016 and further.

Additional Information:
Oceanus suffered RMB12.3 Million losses due to Typhoon damages, which is higher than its profits earned this year.
There is also a negative net income of  -113.45 Millions.
