PT Astra International Tbk, is considering expanding to other sectors such as mining and infrastructure, its chief said on Wednesday.
"Our core business will remain in automobiles, but it is possible for us this year to expand to other sectors such as mining and infrastructure or toll roads," Astra's president director, Michael D. Ruslim, told reporters. He did not elaborate.
The company is controlled by Jardine Cycle & Carriage Ltd. It is also in businesses ranging from plantations to banking, financial institutions and heavy equipment.
The Indonesian mining sector has benefited from a rally in commodity prices while many investors are interested in tapping the infrastructure sector as the government increases infrastructure spending to boost economic growth.
The company also predicted a rebound in the automotive sector this year, following a substantial slowdown in 2006 on high inflation and interest rates.
"This year we are hoping a 25% increase in (new) vehicle sales to 370,000 units, but with continuous improvement in economic conditions, sales can top 400,000 units," Ruslim said.
Vehicle sales in the world's 4th most populous nation plunged by around 40% last year from a historic high of 533,910 in '05 after the government more than doubled domestic fuel prices.
In '06, motorcycle sales dropped by around 13% also from a historic high of 5.1 million units in the previous year. Analysts and experts predict motorcycle sales will top 5 million units again this year.
Astra's shareholders also approved a dividend payment of 1.8 trillion rupiah (US$207.5 million) or 48% of net profit last year, which translates to a total dividend payment of 440 rupiah per share.

Could I just ask anyone what happens to a development regarding . something abt Mercedes wanting to sell Mercedes cars themselves i.e. dumping C&C. Was there ever something like this in the news? I vaguely remembering reading this months ago but never follow it.
Jardine Cycle & Carriage Limited ("JC&C") wishes to announce that it has today sold all its shares in its dormant Thai subsidiary, Automobile Holdings (Thailand) Co., Limited ("AHT"), together with the other shareholders of AHT who also disposed of their respective stakes in AHT, to Sabai Home Co., Ltd. (the "Sale") for an aggregate consideration of THB1. The Sale follows JC&C's earlier disposal of a majority of its interests in Cycle & Carriage (Thailand) Co., Ltd and Cycle & Carriage Mitsu (Thailand) Co., Ltd. With the Sale, AHT ceases to be a subsidiary of JC&C. The Sale is not expected to have any material impact on the earnings per share or the net tangible assets per share of the JC&C Group for the current financial year. None of the Directors or substantial shareholders of JC&C has any interest, direct or indirect, in the Sale. |

Low volume counter. TA signals don't show a definite uptrend now. A little mixed.
Jardine Cycle climbed today. Bank Indonesia yesterday cut its benchmark interest rate by half a percentage point to 10.75%. The move may reduce the amount of interest paid on loans to purchase cars.
PT Astra said last month it expects auto sales in Indonesia to expand by about 10% in 2007 after plunging by as much as 44% this year. Most Indonesians take out loans to buy cars.
Astra is considering buying coal mining companies because of the prospects for the coal industry, company president Michael Ruslim said.
"We want to get back into the mining business," Ruslim told reporters over the weekend.
He did not say which companies Astra would like to buy, but he did identify two firms in which it was not interested: PT Kaltim Prima Coal and PT Arutmin Indonesia, both units of PT Bumi Resources.
Astra used to be in the coal business through 58%-owned subsidiary PT United Tractors, which owned 60% of PT Berau Coal. But United Tractors sold this stake in 2004.
United Tractors finance director Gidion Hasan said Astra could invest in coal mining companies itself, through United Tractors, or through another, dedicated subsidiary that has yet to be established. He said Astra International could buy one big coal firm or a number of small ones.
Astra is 50.09% owned by Singapore-listed Jardine Cycle & Carriage.
PT Astra International Tbk expects to post a lower net profit this year compared to 2005 as the sector remains weak, the company's head said.
Michael D. Ruslim, Astra's president director, told reporters that Indonesian vehicles sales may grow by 10% next year while motorcycle market were expected to return to 2005 levels, when automotive sales hit historic highs.

Astra International , Indonesia's largest automotive distributor, rose 2.3%, although industry data showed on Monday that Indonesia's vehicles sales fell 55.7% in July compared with the year-earlier period due to high interest rates and weak purchasing power.
