Thai shares fell as much as 4.2% -- their biggest one-day loss since May 2004 -- when trading resumed after a military coup, led by stocks associated with the ousted prime minister.

But the key Thai stock index later recouped some of its losses to end only slightly lower, as investors hoped that the military takeover, which has been peaceful so far, may end the political impasse in Thailand.

SET closed down 1.42%, led by a 2.8% loss in the country's top energy firm PTT PCL . The Thai bourse was shut for a national holiday on Wednesday, after the military seized power late on Tuesday and ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Shares in firms founded by, or associated with Thaksin plunged as investors feared a potential backlash including further investigations into his family's sale of its stake in Shin Corp to Temasek for about US$1.9b in January.

Among those companies, Shin Corp fell 5.7%, while Shin Satellite dropped 13.3% and property developer SC Asset plunged 21.4%. Top mobile phone firm AIS , also founded by Thaksin, fell 2.7%. Losses in Bangkok were capped as investors bought bank stocks on hopes that Southeast Asia's worst-performing market -- down 2.96% since January -- could be set to recover following months of political turmoil.
