http://sg.news.yahoo.com/syria-polio-outbreak-may-threaten-europe-experts-warn-023526584.html
Risk to middle East and  Europe from a re-emergence of polio in Syria was partly due to the type of vaccine generally used in regions that have not had the disease for many years.
Polio, caused by a virus transmitted via contaminated food or water, was confirmed among children in northeast Syria last mth - 1st in 14 years.
World Health Organisation (WHO) said the virus probably spread from Pakistan - one of  3 countries where polio is still endemic - and warned that Syria's outbreak posed a threat to millions of children across the Middle East and EU..
Polio passes easily from person to person, it can  spread rapidly among children, especially in unsanitary conditions endured by displaced people in Syria or in crowded refugee camps in neighbouring countries.
The disease invades the nervous system and can cause irreversible paralysis within hours -
WHO's repeated warning is that as long as any single child remains infected with polio, children everywhere are at risk

Discovery means cancer growth can be stopped, tumours can be cured without developing resistance.
Other health news...
Scientists at A*STAR have discovered an enzyme, Wip1 phosphatase.
Discovery could eradicate cancers more effectively n prevent relapses.
1. Wip1 phosphatase, as a potential target to weed out the progression of cancer. Although studies in the past have revealed that this enzyme plays a critical role in regulating the budding of tumours, scientists have for the first time unearthed a mechanism for its mode of action.
2. Conducted by Dr Dmitry Bulavin and his team at A*STAR's Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB), with their findings published in 14 Oct 2013 issue of the prestigious scientific journal,
Cancer Cell.
3. The team discovered that Wip1 phosphatase is a key factor that causes point mutations to sprout in human cancers. These types of mutations stem from errors that are made during DNA replication in the body, causing one base-pair in the DNA sequence to be altered.
4. These mutations can cause cancers to take root, or to become resilient to treatment. By using drugs to inhibit the action of
Wip1 phosphatase, cancer growth can be stunted and tumours can be cured without developing resistance.  It is a ground-breaking finding that sheds light on how mutations in cancer can potentially be wiped out with drugs, allowing cancers to be treated and eliminated effectively, preventing relapses of tumour growth.
5. Dr Dmitry Bulavin said, " Our work on
Wip1 phosphatase for over a decade has now revealed several key features of this molecule. Current findings strongly support the use of an
anti-Wip1 drug for cancer treatment in order to reduce a high frequency of mutations in the genome, which is one of the main drivers of tumour relapses."
6. Prof Hong Wan Jin, Exe Director of IMCB, said, " Dmitry has been the pioneering driver in the mechanistic study of
Wip1 phosphatase, and this discovery is monumental in providing novel understanding on the role of Wip1 in cancer at the genomic and systems levels. I am confident that his team at IMCB can further their work in cancer research to offer new approaches for potential drugs against this target."

In Singapore, there is an increases in kidney failure needing dislysis has risen to 5,237 as compare to, up from 4,895 the previous year. Lastest report Renal  Registry, which tracks  kidney failure cases here,  listed 913 new cases, up from 647 a decade ago.
Kidney failures cases soar - say experts.
Renal failure (also kidney failure or renal insufficiency) is a medical condition in which the kidneys fail to adequately filter waste products from the blood. The two main forms are acute kidney injury, which is often reversible with adequate treatment, and chronic kidney disease, which is often not reversible. In both cases, there is usually an underlying cause. Renal failure is mainly determined by a decrease in glomerular filtration rate, the rate at which blood is filtered in the glomeruli of the ... Is jicama the next superfood?
View Photo
Rich in minerals and vitamin C, jicama deserves a place on your table. This slightly sweet and crunchy root vegetable may lack the marketing budgets of acai and coconut juice, but it acts as a prebiotic to promote " friendly" bacteria in the gut. Plus it may boost collagen and fight wrinkles.
Rich in vitamin C and minerals, jicama, also known as Mexican yam or water chestnut, can be cooked, mashed, or baked, or served raw in slaws, salads, and stir-fries, after you peel its thick skin.
While predictions are swirling that jicama will soon take an honorary place alongside carrots and kale, at this point you're still likely only to find the vegetable at farmers' markets or Mexican groceries.
Jicama, like Jerusalem artichokes, is a source of inulin, a prebiotic that can promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Munching on jicama might also boost the look of your skin, thanks to its vitamin C content (one cup of raw jicama slices provides more than 24 mg of vitamin C). Eating vitamin C-rich foods can increase collagen production, which can help improve skin texture, speed wound healing, and give you a healthy glow.
Still, Livestrong warns that while jicama root is healthy and completely edible, the rest of the plant is toxic, including the seeds, leaves, and pods.
In  ancient China, black rice was only served to the highest authority which
is the emperors. Once you were caught eating black rice, you would be
subject for death execution. This was the reason why in ancient Chinese
times, black rice was referred to as the " Forbidden Rice" .
Today, this type of rice are being  distributed worldwide and its nutritional benefits are already discovered.
Organic brown rice can possible have shed a stone in weight, blood pressure came down from 160/100 to 120/80 and Cholesterol dropped..???.

Black rice  revered in ancient China but overlooked in the West could be the greatest 'superfoods', scientists revealed today. Scientists presented their findings today at the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston.
Scientists from Louisiana State University analysed samples of bran from black rice grown in the southern U.S. They found boosted levels of water-soluble anthocyanin antioxidants.

The cereal. Black rice  is low in sugar but packed with healthy fibre and plant compounds that combat heart disease and cancer, say experts.
Anthocyanins provide dark colours of many fruits and vegetables, such as blueberries and red peppers. They are what makes black rice '
black'.
Research suggests that the dark plant antioxidants, which mop up harmful molecules, can help protect arteries and prevent the DNA damage that leads to cancer.
Food scientist Dr Zhimin Xu said: 'Just a spoonful of black rice bran contains more health promoting anthocyanin antioxidants than are found in a spoonful of blueberries, but with less sugar, and more fibre and vitamin E antioxidants.
'If berries are used to boost health, why not black rice and black rice bran? Especially, black rice bran would be a unique and economical material to increase consumption of health-promoting antioxidants.'
Centuries ago black rice was known as 'Forbidden Rice' in ancient China because only nobles were allowed to eat it. Today black rice is mainly used in Asia for food decoration, noodles, sushi and desserts.
But food manufacturers could potentially use black rice bran or bran extracts to make breakfast cereals, beverages, cakes, biscuits and other foods healthier, said Dr Xu.
When rice is processed, millers remove the outer layers of the grains to produce brown rice or more refined white rice - the kind most widely consumed in the West.
Brown rice is said to be more nutritious because it has higher levels of healthy vitamin E compounds and antioxidants.
But according to Dr Xu's team, varieties of rice that are black or purple in colour are healthier still. They added that black rice could also be used to provide healthier, natural colourants. Studies linked some artificial colourants to cancer and behavioural problems in children.
Victoria Taylor, senior dietician at the British Heart Foundation, said: 'In reality, it's unlikely there's a single food out there that will have a great impact on lowering your risk of heart disease. Healthy eating is about a balanced diet overall.

Scientific research revealed that Xanthopes in mangoesteen stops the development of cancer cells in critical parts of the body such as liver, colon and lungs. The body is usually saved from heart diseases because the fruit reduces the intestine's absorption of bad cholesterols.
