May 25, 1961. A fire broke out in Bukit Ho Swee, the biggest fire that S'pore has experienced since WW2. The blaze left 4 people dead and 15,000 people homeless. About $1m worth of property were destroyed.

July 20, 1810. Columbia declared independence from Spain. Spanish explorers had started exploring the region in the 1500s. Before gaining independence, Columbia was part of the Spanish colony of Nueva Granada, along with Ecuador and Venezuela.

Nov 3, 1839. The Opium War breaks out when British ships bombard Chinese forces in Guangzhou. The hostilities continue until the Chinese are defeated and the treaty of Nanjing is signed in 1842, with Hong Kong bring annexed by Britain.
