Wonderful move by Cordlife amid the STI fall!

Dear Friends,

We did say that we would look at this company again when it is back at $1.30. Today it goes up fast at the open. We have been studying very closely about this stock.

Last article on what we mentioned about $1.30 before we see the stock again:
http://www.danielloh.com/2013/09/singapore-stock-tip-be-careful-of.html

We do think it has potential to go to $1.47-$1.50. But if you are not at it, don't enter amid the hype now. It goes up too fast today. Wait for the pullback if it does.    ...last: $1.365...

Now: $1.34
Target 1: $1.47 - $1.50
Target 2: $1.59-$1.60

Stop loss: $1.27

Company feature in The Edge Magazine. Grp CEO note in an interview that if it were to run a low-cost strategy going forward, it cannot run it in a high cost country. With the recent acquisition of stemlife, hopes to offer cheaper plans for Cordlife?s customers in future by storing the cord blood units in Malaysia. Going forward, the grp wants to be the #1 player in Asean, and will launch new products into Asean countries, such as cord tissue banking.

Thai doctors condemn storing of umbilical-cord blood
By Pongphon Sarnsamak
The Nation/Asia News Network | Fri, Sep 20, 2013
THAILAND - Keeping their babies' umbilical-cord blood in a bank for future use will be of no benefit for new parents or their children, according to the Medical Council of Thailand.

"There is no scientific evidence to prove that using umbilical-cord blood can treat chronic disease or illness at a later date," the council's president Dr Somsak Lohlekha said.

Currently a number of private cord-blood banks provide the service of storing the blood from newborn babies for fees ranging from Bt6,000 to Bt100,000 per year.

Allegedly, obstetricians at state hospitals are asked frequently by the banks to save the blood for their customers. Some have allegedly been offered bribes to undergo these medical practices for them.

"[There's no point in keeping] your kid's umbilical cord blood in storage, even if you keep it for 20 years," he said.

At present, the Medical Council of Thailand only approves the use of stem-cell treatment for blood diseases like leukaemia, malignant lymphoma, aplastic anaemia, multiple myeloma and thalassemia.

Somsak said the council would soon hold a press conference warning the public about the futility of using an umbilical cord-blood bank.

Control on false advertising

The council will also control advertising to lure patients into receiving unlicensed stem-cell treatment for illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes or for aesthetic purposes.

It said the practice has become popular among celebrities and rich people who can afford the treatment, which can cost anything from Bt100,000 to Bt1 million.

It said there are many private clinics, especially in Bangkok, targeting patients with ads for unlicensed stem cell-therapy. Some private clinics offer a package tour for patients to fly to Germany and receive stem-cell injections extracted from unborn sheep that they believe will improve their health and make them look younger.

"We are now collecting more and more evidence to take legal action against physicians or agencies providing such treatment as it could put patients at risk from complications," he said.

CORDLIFE Group, a Singapore-headquartered healthcare company, on Wednesday announced its proposed acquisition of a 19.92 per cent interest in Malaysia's cord blood banking company, StemLife Berhad, for RM29.58 million (S$11.5 million).

The amount will be paid via the issuance of 8 million new ordinary shares in Cordlife at an issue price of S$1.30 per consideration share, and a cash payment of RM2.85 million.

" Through the stake in StemLife, Cordlife is now well-positioned to capitalise on the tremendous growth opportunities in Malaysia driven by rising affluence and greater health awareness...and capitalise on economies of scale and scope...to offer its services and products to Stemlife's existing markets," said Jeremy Yee, chief executive officer of Cordlife.

This is in line with the group's stated intentions in its March 2012 prospectus to develop and expand its business and operations overseas.
