Chinese to ride wave

Pressed by the difficult market conditions, China plans to enhance the competitiveness of its shipbuilding industry by developing a handful of major players, said Guo Yanyan, a senior official at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

The government will further consolidate the sector by encouraging mergers and acquisitions and reorganization among Chinese shipbuilders, said Guo, at the Senior Maritime Forum of the 2011 International Maritime Conference in Shanghai on Tuesday.

" We will strive to foster more than five Chinese shipbuilders so they will be among the world's top 10 (in terms of production capacity) by the end of 2015," he said.

According to the plan, industrial consolidation will see China's 10 biggest shipbuilders account for more than 70 percent of the country's domestic shipbuilding production. Small and medium-sized companies will be encouraged to develop specialized shipbuilding techniques, Guo added.

The weak recovery of the global economy has resulted in a depressed market for shipbuilders this year. The number of orders for new vessels at Chinese shipyards - particularly for tankers and bulk-carriers - has been much lower than in 2010, said Zhang Shengkun, the president of the Shanghai Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.

" With their technological advantages, South Korean shipbuilders can manufacture vessels with more added-value. Chinese shipbuilders have not paid enough attention to their product structure and are facing a serious problem of overcapacity in the market," said Zhang at the forum.

Guo said Chinese shipbuilders should strive to develop their technology to meet demand in the international market.

" Most Chinese shipbuilders produce bulk-cargo ships as their major product. To tap into the global market, it is time to develop the technologies to make vessels with more added-value, such as container vessels, liquefied-natural-gas carriers and drilling ships," said Guo.

Another emerging market for Chinese shipbuilders is the oceanographic engineering equipment industry, said Guo, citing the government's 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015).

" China's sales revenue from oceanographic engineering equipment is expected to exceed 200 billion yuan ($31 billion) this year, and the country's market share for equipment used in the detection of oceanic oil and gas is targeted to reach 20 percent in five year's time," said Guo.

In 2010, China's accomplished shipbuilding output exceeded a total deadweight tonnage of 60 million tons for the first time, a fivefold increase from 2005. By the end of the third quarter of this year, the accomplished shipbuilding output exceeded a total deadweight tonnage of 51 million tons.

CO SCO Corp

Underperform | S$0.91

Macquarie starts at Underperform

with a S$0.60 target price.

It says the stock trades at an

expensive 1.43 times 2012

price-to-book ratio against

Asian shipbuilders’ average of

1.22 times. “We are concerned

with the lack of margin visibility

due to weak yard execution

and the sharply slowing dry bulk

new orders trend. Hence, we

believe that current valuations

for COSCO are too rich.”(quote Toady Sat papaer)

Don't think is a gd time to buy. Is a down trend stock. If current price cannot hold and go below 82.5 cents then it is heading to 70 cents...

this cosco is different from those s-chips, if can hold cosco for a few years, the upside potential is HUGE., it may perhaps even take only 1 short year to rebound back towards $2 .........and the downside risks from current price is  extremely limited, even on those doomsday scenario in march 2009 cosco was still at above 60 cts to 70 cts region, hence worst case downside risks is 10 cts plus loss per lot, that's peanuts compared to the huge upside potential of $2 plus region.

Me bought some at 83 cts for long-term.

I played this since 2002 till now a few rounds liao, it always bounces back without fail.

Chinese consolidation looming

China plans a massive consolidation of shipyards so that the ten largest players control 70% of the nation’s shipbuilding, according to Shanghai-based business publication China Securities Journal, quoting sources at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

China Securities Journal quoted Guo Yanyan, an official at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. But officials have made similar comments in the past, with little new progress.

China has expanded its shipyards as part of a state-mandated policy to become the world’s largest shipbuilding nation. In 2010 it overtook South Korea, but has fallen back into second position this year. Orders have fallen for dry bulk ships and tankers, while South Korea has benefited from new orders for LNG carriers and ultra-large containerships, dominating the market for these more sophisticated vessels.

so do u think cosco  will reach 94-95 cts in this current short-term STI rebound or u think cosco to fall back to test 83 cts 1st, then rebound to 95ish cents in final week of dec/early jan?

alexchia01      ( Date: 28-Nov-2011 23:25) Posted:

1) There are lots of counters to long, I can't possibly list them all. Personally, I prefer to see how market opens and then decide which counter to enter. However, if you want a counter to keep watch, I suggest UMS.

2) Yes, I think Cosco can reach $0.94 or $0.950.

3) Nobody knows how far this rebound will go or last. Just keep a close watch and be prepared from sudden changes.

Howe123      ( Date: 28-Nov-2011 20:29) Posted:

Alex,

1)So can u share which counter uthink still got meat to chase to buy tomorow?

BTW,   I buy stocks usually is minimum 10 lots for each counter for each trade

so 2) do u think Cosco can reach at least 94-95 cts.

3) u say STI on rebound now , but do u think STI will fall to 2500ish before end of dec, heard newspapers got many analysts say STI will fall to 2500 b4 end of 2011, also my own broker said this last fri too before he went for 1 week leave

so 3 queries in all
