He has spent 70 years without food or water

AHMEDABAD

The yogi, Prahlad Jani (picture), is sealed in a hospital in Ahmedabad where he is under 24-hour observation by 30 doctors and will be subjected to a series of medical tests.

“The observation from this study may throw light on human survival without food and water,” said Dr G Ilavazahagan, director of India’s Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences.

“This may help in working out strategies for survival during natural calamities, extreme stressful conditions and extra-terrestrial explorations like future missions to the Moon and Mars by the human race.”

The experiment started on April 22 and will take 15 to 20 days.

“Jani says he meditates to get energy. Our soldiers will not be able to meditate, but we would still like to find out more about the man and his body,” said Dr Ilavazahagan.— A team of military doctors backed by India’s national defence research centre is studying an 83-year-old holy man who claims to have spent seven decades without food or water.

No more Happy Meals in Silicon Valley?

NEW YORK

Elected officials in Santa Clara County, the area to the south of San Francisco that covers most of Silicon Valley, have introduced a law banning restaurants from offering toys with any children’s meals that fail to meet national health criteria.

In other words, the Happy Meal is for the chop. It is believed to be the first such law anywhere in the world.

Mr Ken Yeager, the supervisor who devised the ban, told the

“Obviously, toys in and of themselves do not make children obese.

“But it is unfair to parents and children to use toys to capture the tastes of children when they are young and get them hooked on eating high-sugar, high-fat foods early in life.”

Restaurants will be fined up to US$1,000 ($1,400) for every meal they are caught selling with a toy, should that meal be deemed unhealthy by federal standards.— Silicon Valley, the undisputed leader of the technology revolution, is seeking to add a new accolade to its reputation by becoming the leader of the fight against obesity induced by fast food.San Francisco Chronicle that the aim was to break “the link between unhealthy food and prizes”.

Cigarettes will be sold in plain, standardised packages carrying large, graphic warnings against smoking — and the brand name in small print — from 2012, under proposed legislation.

The government also sharply raised taxes on cigarettes by 25 per cent, adding about A$2 ($2.50) to a packet of 30, with the proceeds being ploughed in to

healthcare.

“Cigarettes are not cool, cigarettes kill people,” said Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. “This will be the most hardline regime for cigarette packaging anywhere in the world,” he added.

“The big tobacco companies will hate what we are doing,” Mr Rudd said. “The government however makes no apology what for what we are doing — it is the RIGHT decision.”

* UNpopular  but  RIGHT for the PEOPLE *

The World Health Organisation said yesterday it was

“delighted” with Australia’s decision. Australia’s plan “sets a new gold standard for the regulation of tobacco products”, it said.

“With this major breakthrough, Australia has taken a stand against all forms of advertising of a product that kills half of the people who use it.”

Imperial Tobacco Australia said it planned to challenge the ban on the grounds that it would affect its profits, arguing that branding has commercial value.

“Introducing plain packaging just takes away the ability of a consumer to identify our brand from another, and that’s of value to us,” a spokeswoman said.

“It really affects the value of our business as a commercial enterprise and we will fight to support protecting our international property rights.”

— Australia said yesterday it would become the world’s first country to ban logos and branding on cigarette packets, sparking a furious response from the tobacco industry.AGENCIES

Ferrari F1 barcode a hidden cigarette ad?

Critics say Ferrari’s red, white and black bar code logo plastered on their racing cars and on the overalls of their drivers, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, is subliminal advertising for Marlboro cigarettes, said

A spokesman for the European Public Health Commissioner has urged the Spanish and British governments to investigate whether Marlboro may have broken the law. Formula One teams are due to race in Spain in less than two weeks and in Britain in July.

Dr John Britton, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and director of its tobacco advisory group, said: “The bar code looks like the bottom half of a packet of Marlboro cigarettes. I was stunned when I saw it. This is pushing at the limits. If you look at how the bar code has evolved over the last four years, it looks like creeping branding.”The Times of London. Cigarette advertising is banned for sporting events under European Union legislation.

Tobacc o firms target As ian women

Advertisements telling smokers they are smarter, more energetic and better lovers than their nonsmoking counterparts are a familiar sight across Bangladesh — something unimaginable in most other countries.

One in a rural area, Dr Bennoor remembers, said that “if a lady smokes, her baby will be smaller and it will be easier to deliver, the labour will be less painful”.

“These are very ruthless advertisements,” said Dr Bennoor, an associate professor at Bangladesh’s National Hospital for Chest Diseases.

The promotion is being linked to an alarming rise in tobacco use in the impoverished South Asian country, particularly among women and the young.

Bangladesh fits a pattern emerging across the region of rising rates of female tobacco use, particularly in South-east Asian countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Cambodia. The World Health Organisation warns that tobacco companies are targeting women in developing countries as a new growth market. Bangladeshi chest doctor Saifuddin Bennoor has seen many misleading cigarette advertisements, but the one that suggested smoking could make childbirth easier beats them all.AFP

A big bonus for NTUC Income policyholders

SINGAPORE

This is a 53-per-cent increase on last year’s payout of $270.8 million.

The insurer’s premium income grew 14.5 per cent to hit a record $3 billion last year.

Chief executive of NTUC Income Tan Suee Chieh said its customers had turned to them in “their flight to safety during the financial turbulence” last year, as they trusted the home-grown insurer to be financially strong.

He attributed the company’s success primarily to its change in culture, which places a “decided emphasis on a more professional approach to managing the business, achieving excellence and being performance oriented”.

Mr Tan said that during the economic downturn last year, the dedication of staff who have been with the company for many years helped earned the confidence of its channel partners, including banks and financial advisory firms.

In celebration of its 40th anniversary, some 250,000-odd long-standing policyholders — those who have been with the insurer for 10 years or more — will enjoy a one-time “special cash bonus” this May. The cheque amount will range between $25 and $500, depending on the policy duration. This year’s bonus payout is made up of the regular Annual and Special bonus amounting to $283.9 million, an Anniversary Bonus of $123 million, and the Special Cash Bonus worth $8.6 million.

Earlier this month, NTUC Income launched a free insurance scheme for low-income families, which will cost the insurer up to $500,000 over the next three years.

— NTUC Income yesterday declared a generous bonus payout of $415.5 million  for policyholders this year, on the back of a “sterling” performance last year despite the global financial crisis.

Genting soars as Sands effect appear muted

SINGAPORE, April 29 — The benchmark Straits Times Index was 0.56 per cent higher as of 0310 GMT today.

Shares of Genting Singapore rose as much as 9.2 per cent to 94.5 Singapore cents, two days after rival operator Las Vegas Sands opened the city-state’s second casino.

“Some people have observed that for the past couple of days, the crowd at Genting was still brisk,” a trader with a local brokerage said.

CIMB also upgraded Genting Singapore to “outperform” and maintained its target price of S$1.23.

“We believe that both properties have different propositions, reaching out to different market segments,” CIMB said in a report.

“RWS (Resorts World at Sentosa) will appeal to the family-oriented gamblers while MBS (Marina Bay Sands), with its extensive retail and MICE facilities and CBD location, is well position to capture a slice of business travellers”.

Around 0310 GMT, Genting Singapore was up 8.1 per cent at 93.5 Singapore cents with over 213 million shares changing hands. — Reuters
