Congratulations to Singapore!! Well done... this is yet another excitement to spice up our lives in the tiny city state.. 2008 F1 Race, for 5 years. I actually count the Air Show on-going now as exciting too... Rolls Royce is setting up factory here for aircraft engine announced just before the airshow. 2009 IR and Marina Bay 2010 YOG and brand new Sports Hub and Kallang I think it is not just a matter of saving Moscow for the real thing... Moscow has hosted the real thing twice already and that actually worked to their disadvantage. (it's like, com'on, give others a chance!) The most recent one was in 1980 when the western world boycotted the summer game and they are in the running (maybe awarded??) for Winter Olympic The success lies in how Singapore understands where our chances are and exploits it. YOG is a scale down version and from the start the IOC stated that one of their objectives is give smaller countries a chance to host international games. Besides, honestly, although Moscow has all that are needed to host YOG ready, the facilties were 30 year old by 2010 cos they were left behind from the 1980's summer olympics. Whereas Singapore will have brand new sports hub and the olympic village at Ayer Rajar. In terms of hardware, Singapore is ahead... So I believe Singapore won by its own merit. Anyway, I am happy that Singapore won! |

aiyah. s'pore will likely win the bid to host the youth olympics lah. they're saving moscow for the real one. yea, there are pros and cons everywhere. the difference in europe/america is the land. it's large enough so that there's space for everyone. don't like the city? stay in the suburbs, or in the rural areas. here, there's no option for that. consider how many of our kids have even seen a live chicken, cow, or sheep. but yes. haha, we do complain too much. general state of discontent, i guess. like being in water that is not boiling hot, but just discomfiting. |

err... do u travel out of singapore before? do u think in America, there is no problem with influx of China people to New York, Taiwanese to L.A. and Hong Kong people to Canada? do u think there is no problem at Europe, like Germany while more and more Turkish "migrate" over there? that is life, life is not always a bed of roses.. I am praying hard Singapore will win for the city of youth olympics ! heee... |

Singapore is just like the US and Australia....population is mainly migrants. We have to stir them to behave like the typical Singaporean "e.g. kiasu...hehehehe", it is the duty of the Singaporean. The migrants will behave the ways that they are familiar with if we don't teach them |

Really, jasonfaxingliu is right. Personally the area i stay in is one such target of the influx of China chinese. Suddenly I see litter growing, including even notice boards at the bus stop. There is a Chinaman working at the 7-11 downstairs, but he behaves as though he owes the place. He doesn't wear his uniform at night, and displays a very impatient look whenever customers are slow to keep their change. (He puts his elbow ON the counter and rests his chin there, tapping the counter rapidly when people are still keeping their change) Not to mention him talking loudly with his other china friends at the busstop and acting fully like an uncouth civilian. There are others as well, whose act of spontaneously throwing rubbish with the flick of the wrist puts me off greatly. I have not seen this act before they came (My area is really quite a clean area). I once told a group of teenagers off once, asking them not to litter as I was walking behind them. They told me, so what? |

That's right! If our country is really that bad(no society/govt are perfect), why are there so many foreign workers/talents/businessmen keeps coming? No matter what's their purpose of staying here, one thing is for sure, thay are here for a better future or to make money. So lets follow the crowd and concentrate on making more $$ instead of arguing on this further... Cheers to everyone on this last day of celebration for Lunar New Year - YuanXiaoJieKuaiLe!!! |

Yeah, don't feel like Singapore Singapore these days. Litter problem worses as no one claim responsible to educate new immigrant, foreign workers and tourist worker (they came as tourist but work in Singapore and often over stay) to be civic concious. I live om 6th floor and every morning you'll see its full of trust everywhere !!! even those use "private staff" thrown out from masterroom window. Well, many are renting out their rooms and flat for money to keep up with the higher cost. Foreigners are sleeping at the void deck (it is rather comfortable) and often you get push in MRT and Buses. People jump Q and more... We welcome new settller but someone has to take the lead to educate them or install stiff rules to make sure our environemnt is still comfortable. Many are migrating and if our environment worsen, it will motivate brain drain... |

Frankly speaking, I actually like Australia. The young are made to pay more tax so that the old will be taken care of. Not to mention educations for their citizens. Asian values and filial piety expect the young to take care of the old themselves. Now adays they young tends to detest living with the old. So this is a way of making them responsible, indirectly. |

The health of a Nation's economy has nothing to do with extravagant lifestyle. A lifestyle can't change the economy, but the health of the economy may change the life style of its citizens! Whether ones is extravagance or not does not depend whether you're rich or poor. The poor could be extravagant too!!!! Singapore has always been a cosmopolitan city having a mixture of people from all over the world and that makes it so vibrant with many colors and hues! Cheers! |

Hi LesBleus, I think they are giving out payouts in 2 tranches, April and Oct. Yea.. u bet!! the abolishment of the estate duty definitely benefit the "great" guys up there.. Oh well, I beg to differ that its a good thing to attract all the flithy rich here.. definitely they going to spur up the economy abit due to their extravagant lifestyle.. but then on the flip side, they will stir up cost of living as well... and once these riches leave sg for better haven... they will left behind shits for us to clear.. i.e. bursting of assets bubbles like housing etc... Yes elf, I fully agree with you on the current living environment, I dun feel like i am in singapore anymore when i see more foreigners from PRC, India, Vietnam, etc ard mi... |

Hi fellow SJ mates, I'm wondering if the payout is gonna be in April or October as indicated in the newspaper. Kinda blur with regard to the payout dates; why is there two? Also, I cant help but agree that the abolishment of the estate duty benefits mainly the rich. You just need to make a simple connection to the financial status of those UP there drafting the papers and the abolishment haha. However, its good for the country's economy as well i guess. Lure the filthy rich here to increase GDP/GNP. Great for the wealth management industry but not common folks like us (if you 'qualify' to be one) haha |
