BEIJING, China - China's central bank said Friday it would raise the amount of money banks must keep in reserve, in the latest of a series of moves aimed at bringing high inflation under control. The reserve requirement ratio will be raised by 50 basis points from February 24, the People's Bank of China said in a statement -- already the second time this year it has announced such a measure. The move comes less than two weeks after the bank raised interest rates for the third time in four months as Beijing struggles to keep control of soaring prices, which it fears could lead to social unrest. It also follows the release of data on Tuesday showing consumer prices rose 4.9 percent last month, well above the government's targeted ceiling of four percent for the year and up from 4.6 percent in December. The figures suggest Beijing's attempts to cool spending, which has sent prices of everyday goods such as food and fuel soaring, have not yet born fruit. " It's indicative of a greater sense of policy urgency out of Beijing in the last few months, in response to this concerning pick-up in inflation," said Brian Jackson, senior strategist at the Royal Bank of Canada. " They're using every policy tool at their disposal, and that's all they can do. They were a little bit slow to get moving on the monetary policy tools and now they're playing a bit of catch-up, so that's what we're seeing." Tuesday's data showed food costs continued to see strong growth last month, with grain prices up 15.1 percent, the government said. The grain supply situation has become an increasing source of official anxiety as a drought across northern China over the past four months is threatening the important winter wheat crop. At the same time, prices of fresh fruit grew 34.8 percent. Inflation, particularly related to food, has a history of sparking unrest in China, particularly among the poorer segments of the population. It has become a hot issue for the government as the economy fizzes along after the global financial crisis and last year overtook Japan as the world's number two economy after the United States. Economists blame the huge stimulus measures introduced by Beijing during the downturn for sending prices soaring. Beijing is also concerned high property prices will lead to a real estate bubble that could burst with calamitous results for China. The latest hike brings the average reserve requirement ratio to 19.5 percent, Dow Jones Newswires reported. - AFP/ir | ||||

Dreams are normally purely symbolic in nature,     and seldom, if ever, direct, like what you mentioned.           Like the 'I-Ching' or other forms of human divination,                   interpretation of the revealed symbolism is required,                       after careful deciphering. This requires proficiency in                           the psychic arts, or at least a natural flair for matters psychic. ![]()

Wah brother, so surprised ! and Roti boy too! Don't worry about OCBC, I didn't buy it. Is it options express? American stocks damn expensive, the only way to trade them is via options. And trading with options requires a whole new set of skills. For one thing, options are not forever, and they expire in a few months, depending on the expiry date of the options contracts you bought. And options devalue the closer they reach the expiry date. Trading NYSE or Nasdaq is a whole new level altogether, are you ready for it? Losses and profits will be multiplied many times in the US market, and in double quick time. I am actually just getting myself familiarized with the US market before I jump in. STI takes days to move, but US market can move in that space within one day. I really suggest you use a virtual account and trade first, and not a cash account ! Also wait for the US market correction... even though it may take weeks to come... Have a good weekend guys! PS : Budget mentioned about SGD currency appreciation to fight inflation. A stronger currency is usually bad news for stock market. You see that in US market all the time. Weak US dollar, stock market rises, Strong US dollar, stock market falls. Read more about the budget in tomorrow's paper. Any policies that try to contain inflation, eg. interest rate hike, bank ratio reserve hike, currency appreciation are usually bad news for the stock market.

It is easier said than done...     Humans are by nature 'gian-gian'  to snap up good bargains...           So if you adopt my style, you will be 'missing a lot of boats' in the process.                 And because of this, you will definitely change your style at a later stage.                       As for Gar-Gar dropping to .50, I have to admit it sounds a bit far-fetched,                               it is precisely because I am  considered 'irrational' that I have avoided big losses... ![]()

Hi Roti, I doubt it will go down to 50c. The last time it hit  that low  was June last yr when STI was at 2650. Need to correlate STI with GAR as it is part of the index. I believe  0.65 is  the lowest liao. I will quene to buy on Monday.

My style of playing suits me well...   But it may not work for others though.         Thus, each must develop or cultivate for himself/herself  a unique style             which suits one's personality and emotional make-up.                     For many, cutting loss is an absolutely taboo thought, let alone act.                           And grabbing a little bit of profit makes them go wild with ecstacy                                   and untold happiness... ![]()

In this episode...I truly understand your mechanics... You ONLY buy at your price, if the market dont give, you wont take.. And absolutely ZERO tolerance for losses ( your tolerance is only half a bid ) which makes my chasing for STXOSV looks silly as I bought another 10 lots today at $1.19 ( just 2 cents down ) Well noted in my " heart" notebook once again. :D

I wouldn't waste my energies with any internal arguments though...     Stocks betting is a very straight-forward act.           One wins if the bet is right, and loses if wrong.                 There's no need to gnash teeth over anything...

if i am right, monday there should be a technical rebound to prob 66-67. i really doubt we can get at 65. if i am wrong, monday will continue the downtrend which means we will only suffer if we buy at 65.

Stocks betting is actually a lonely 'sport'...     One must never refer to others when playing stocks...           Just do your what you need to do, impersonally and alone...               Of course to be able to do do, one must have first                           mastered the technical aspects... ![]()
