SMM: Credit Suisse expects 2Q12e operating profit of $180m (1Q12: $120m). The house forecasts an operating margin of 13-14%, citing KEP's sequential decline in underlying O& M margin in 2Q12.
This compares with consensus/mgt's expectations of 15% margins and above. Bloomberg consensus tips 2Q12e net profit of $167m. SMM results are due tmrw.

According to Upstream, Petrobras is set to award

contracts worth c. US$4.5bn for the construction of

topsides for 6 of 8 replica FPSO vessels over the next few

days. The contracts for the remaining 2 units will be

awarded in the next 18 months. These were the potential

contracts we have highlighted previously. Among the

shortlisted yards reported to be receiving these contracts

imminently are Keppel Corp and Sembcorp Marine, apart

from 4 other players - DM Construtora de Obras /TKK

Engenharia, IESA Oleo e Gas, Tome Engenharia/Ferrostaal

Industrieanlagen, Mendes Jr Trading Engenharia/OSX

Construção Naval. Each unit is expected to worth c

US$750m.

Here, too, prices are forming a base that looks somewhat like a minor reverse head-andshoulders. Immediate resistance is near current levels, at $4.62, with more significant resistance at $4.74. Volume is picking up, but only slightly and not sufficient to trigger a breakout.

The break may occur when quarterly momentum turns up decisively in early July. Note, too, that ADX is low, at 10, and that points to the absence of a strong trend. Support is at $4.40, and prices would really need to move above $4.74 to indicate an upside target, which could be as high as $5.40.

Keppel and Sembcorp to benefit from new Brazilian orders

21 rigs are awaiting the big shipping lines by 12 September.

According to CIMB, favourable newsflow on Petrobras rigbuilding orders appears  imminent for the shipyards as Upstream reported that Sete Brasil could ink the final contracts for the remaining 21 rigs by 12 September.

The publication also suggested that  SMM has received the LOI for the  remaining five drillships worth  S$5bn. This follows Keppel’s Apr 12  announcement of the LOI for five  semi-subs (S$5.2bn).  Our top pick is SCI as it is less
susceptible to volatile prices and is  the cheapest at 6x CY13 EV/EBITDA  vs. KEP and SMM’s 11x.

Upstream reported that Sete Brasil  has signed LOIs with four shipyards  to build the remaining 21 rigs. The  shipyards are Keppel BrasFELS,  Odebrecht, Sembcorp Marine’s  Estaleiro Jurong Aracruz and  Engevix. Petrobras is also expected  to sign the back-to-back charters  with Sete Brasil between July and  September 2012.

We believe that final construction  contracts with the shipyards could  coincide with Petrobras’s signing of  charter contracts. There has been no announcement from Sembcorp Marine on the LOI as we think that pricing negotiations could still be ongoing, with room for improvement. Success in clinching Petrobras orders should put the Singapore yards on track for our 2012 contract wins target of S$9.2bn for Keppel and S$10.2bn for Sembcorp Marine.

Watch out for SembMar & Kepcorp securing contracts in the coming months

Petrobras approves construction of 6 semisubs more

projects on the horizon which could provide near term

catalysts for Keppel Corp and SembCorp Marine

Petrobras has approved the construction of 6 newbuild

semisubmersibles in a contract with Sete Brasil. We believe this

could signal impending conversion of Keppel Corp’s existing

LOI into a firm contract, a positive near term catalyst, in our

view. We believe this latest development also implies that we

could be approaching the tail-end of Petrobras’ protracted 28-

rig contracting process, and that SembCorp Marine could also

announce firm orders for the remaining 5 Petrobras drillships.

We believe this could be worth c. US$4bn. Separately,

Upstream reported that contract signing for the chosen yards

will now take place between July and September 2012.

Apart from the 28-rig newbuilding programme, we note more

Petrobras-related projects on the horizon. These include

fabrication and integration contracts for 8 Petrobras-owned

FPSOs and integration work for 2 chartered Petrobras-bound

FPSOs. We believe KEP and SMM are keen contenders for

these projects given their track record in this segment.

Not surprising after DOW's showing with the jobs data. But like you said, this counter is not for punters. It's a fact. Waiting for price to drop further to pick up again. Likely to see test at 4.50 level if DOW down another round tonight.

SMM / Baker Tech: SMM has filed a court appeal with respect to its claims against PPL Holdings. Recall in late May, the High Court had dismissed SMM’s claims which effectively disputed Baker Tech’s disposal of PPL to QD Asia Pacific. Baker Tech has called for a trading halt this morning.
