Scanning thumbprint is not really efficient cos finger too dry or too wet, it'll not work. You will be asked to go to the counter to check manually again. Btw, what is the success rate of those scaning fingerprint only once and cleared to go? Our pace of life is too fast, I wonder we have one of the highest hypertension cases in the world? |

Use computerised thumb print at point of exit and entry to check with the scan thumbprint to cut down this type of mistake. | ||||

don't play play, this is the third incidence of breaches of security. I think sacking, demoting and repremanding people wouldn't help alrdy, after making so much publicity, by top brass people and papers, after the first incidence. auto sensorship could be one of the follow-up option, if not more involved would be sending to chopping board leow. agreed fatigue may attributed to the lapse. ha ha today paper said, both copilot and pilot activated their eyes saver. they overshot the destination. the control tower activated the alarm clock at the cockpit to wake them up to make an illegal U turn back for landing. not sure whether on coming aircraft got the same facility to wake both pilots up to make an emergency diversion to avoid collision/?? your pant will wet if happen that you are in the same flight. |

apathy.. bo-chap i.e bad work attitude to me is the main cause. The computer system was installed to help in situation like this when it flagged out that the person failed the electronic fingerprinting. Tried again with another machine, failed again.. gosh it didn't mean anything to these utterly bored custom officers!
One thing I noticed though is that there seems to be little media 'publicity' on this case... why huh? self censorship?

Proper training only addresses part of the issue. Another issue though is that some jobs are really so monotonous that after doing it for a long time, the brain gets dulled. The solution is to change the job process to engage the mind consistently. Or rotate monthly assignment of the officers engaged in monotonous jobs. Everyday, take passport, stamp passport, say "next, please", see how quickly your brain goes into a rut. |

I don't think fatigue caused this incident. It's more like boredom. Imagine, if you had to look at hundreds of passports a day everyday of your working life... it is so monotonous and boring. At some point in time, someone would go into "screen saver" mode and make a mistake like that.

Over-worked, under-paid,not properly taken care of definitely will result in fatigued officers. Working in aircon environment can caused slip-ups, what more those without aircon ? Spare a thought for the many officers manning Tuas and Woodlands checkpoint. Are they given face masks to wear when carrying out their duties ? How many litres of vehicle fumes are they breathing in daily in their line of work. It's easy to say this is appalling in your office, go test it out yourself like I did yesterday queueing to come back from JB with my car aircon swith-off and all windows down waiting in line for clearance behind an army of motorcycles, cars and trucks spewing exhaust fumes constantly, daily. If this does not caused fatigued, it will shorten the officers life span and they won't die from old age illnesses but from lung cancer. http://comment.straitstimes.com/showthread.php?t=12027 |

Front-line staff fatigued? I PERFECTLY comprehend Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng when he condemned the latest publicised slip-up of the Home Team, calling it 'appalling'. But before we hammer the front-line Immigration officers, may I suggest looking into intangibles like work fatigue, work hours, impact of shift work and overwhelming workload because of the peak season, like the recent school holidays. It is the confluence of all these intangible but nevertheless equally critical factors that causes slip-ups to occur. For instance, an air-traffic controller will be too mentally fatigued and lose his alertness should he work for too long without adequate rest. Fatal crashes will then occur due to a slowed response-reflex action. We need to find out whether the airports and entry and exit points have adequate manpower or whether front-line staffing needs boosting. It is not totally the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority worker's fault if he slips up when he has been working at maximum performance plus overtime for days on end without adequate rest. Lim Boon Hee some comments : Its not only frontline staff that is feeling fatigue. At the rate we are pushed to work and make a living, most of Singapore's population is also feeling tired. How much more can we take being told you need to work harder to keep you job and to earn less... ----------------------- We should have a front line staff appreciation day. Or a society for prevention of cruelty to front line staff. They deserve much more to boost their sagging morale. Anyway, chins up FLS (not flys ah... Front Line Staff).. go on and be the best you can be...you are only human! Let your star shine!! --------------------------- view all 21 comments : http://www.straitstimes.com/ST%2BForum/Story/STIStory_251771.html |

You are right there... Humans are still primitive, with reference to the future... It is primitive now to discard shitty evolution theory and then turn to and stick with another equally unbelievable alternative when other possibilities can exist. |

Baseer... :) Yup, I luv it! It's disgustingly amazing how many people in the whole world still stick religiously (like a religion) to Darwin's shitty evolution theory., which has been very satisfyingly proved not to hold water time and time again by thiose beautiful rational minds of our time, and recent past... |

Mediacorp Arts Central is showing " Making of Blue Planet " tonight at 10pm. One awesome documentary series ! -------------------------------------------- They say only less than 2% of the ocean floor has been explored by scientists .. and what many new species of marine life have they discovered in that space ! extrapolating Darwin's Theory ...( iPunter will love this )... will we discover an Aqua-Man ? .... hahaha ! |

Presidency can only last for 2 terms. So not surprising that they try to dig in as much as possible. Cos after they step down, what are they going to survive on?
