woa, I was on the road and in this span of time, so many interesting posts.. especially on globalisation... .. i wish I can spend more time, but my time on the net is limited... first, re my emoticons.. geojam suggested sending Elf on a speed reading course.. I thot she need more a pair of pink spectacles and she would concentrate when she is (love) interested in the subject. I think she needed a spin around... like when you spin a toddler to change her mood.. I guess she must be quite sian with work... but geojam your thot that she needed a bull run is absolutely spot on too.... it is very interesting to note the different interpretations (actually I was being naughty here to let you folks interpret freely...) dear fairygal.. I get the thingy from surfing the internet.. and do some specific pickings... geojam, livermore has got the right directions.. btw, fairygal, the "little" house is not so little... it has a interesting history.. W B Yeats spend his honeymoon here, and James Joyce also go there frequently..... and Eastonbay, you are spot on that elfin is no "ding dong" girl, she is definately a alpha plus (read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley).. and for that matter the ladies here are too... btw where is Bunnie, Fairygal.. I wonder what is their views on globalisation....... and yes geojam, globalisation includes being able to post msg, do trading on internet in the far corners of the earth..... |

keke, eastonbay, *leaf badge!!!* hehe. yea, i know i like to 'ding dong' a bit, esp with my bunnie, it's all just in fun tho. if we're so serious all the time, how to enjoy life? at the same time, i'm serious when it comes to serious topics. thanks for the compliments. :) and no need introduction, i watch all the people here, so even if i don't talk to them, more or less have an idea of who they are and how they're like. :P SJ is not just for socialising you see, or just to do TA. To get a clearer idea of the market, i need an idea of the sentiment on the ground too. SJ acts as one such barometer for me. hehe. gahh!! eastonbay and victorian! so scary.....i dun wanna talk to you guys anymore man.... o_0 otherwise no more secrets liao. spot on. hehe. lausk22, (see, i make you as pink and sweet as my bunnie!), yah, i know you're just kidding lah. relax, no offence taken at all. :))) wow, sounds like you run your office well. :) shplayer. yes. fully agreed. some of our ministers are.... well. let's just say they're hothoused scholars. :P back to eastonbay: languages--I speak basic bahasa and thai as well actually. Would like to improve my competency of bahasa. simply because our neighbours are malaysia and indonesia, and in the future, they'll rise faster than singapore. If i had one language choice other than the ones above: arabic. in terms of business, the arab world is the next destination after china and india. Oil money is big money, and Dubai is tax free, for instance. And if you talk about the rise of Islamic fundamentalism, you need to be able to understand arabic to understand the mentality of this specific terrorism. |

Dear elf, Who am I?....lausk always find himself in a Catch22 situation. The reality of life is we will never win! We just strive to live as best as we can. The moment we are born, we wait to be reborn if it ever happens. However, bad or good we live, we die. However, wealthy or poor, we are, we die. Life is a process, a cycle. We are constantly being replaced - cell by cell, body by body. To leave our legacy, some of us procreate. Some of us develop others. It does not really matter how much I lose or win in material terms, so long I'm happy and satisfy with the process of living. If one find doing something distressing, then don't do, walk away. Life is a game that we play. We win sometime. We lose sometime. No point of brooding over losses and make ourself unhappy, ie crying over spilt milk. People have to grow up. We cannot remain as kiddies forever. You talk like a young veteran, speak sweetly, sound worldly wise and street smart. That's why many old men luv to chat up with u. Even if I drop the word "old" and just use "men", it may sound like casting aspersion at u if perceive it in a negative perspective. I don't cast aspersions. However, we cannot control what others think. It all boils down to a matter of perception. If you want to think negatively, you will interpret it negatively. If you are positive then it will be positive. I don't see anything wrong with being old. The old should be proud and happy to be old. Because the alternative is to die young! I hold quite a senior post and have a harem of 30 of your type under my tutelege. Frankly, not easy to manage, rather stressful but also fun. They keep me enthused and feel young. It took me 7years to build up a core group because many come and go behaving like tourists and treating the workplace like a vacationland. My legacy is to leave my workplace well staffed and succession is in place. |

my guess is mid 20s. Graduate at around 22 or 23. Work short stint with WHO, had at least one job and currently working in govt related work/civil service. So, around 26. No prize for guessing it right as it will not be confirmed by the person herself. Also, you are right about learning foreign languages. Say, if you can only pick one foreign language to learn, which one do you pick? (assuming that you know none besides Chinese and English). I speak German but I think it is quite useless because besides some Swiss, Germans and Austrians, no one else speak that language. |

elfinchilde, hi (never said hullo yet and therefore you do not know me). I am won over to become one of your fan by your situation awareness w.r.t. Globalisation, your pts abt PRC vs SGP people, your sensibility given your age. I fully agreed with you about the behaviour of Singapore youths these days and how ignorant they are w.r.t current affairs and world affairs. Also, Singaporean's complacency abt our language proficiency. Kinda of flattery here but I must say this; Singapore needs more of such people (like you) to compete in this increasing competitive global village. Know yourself and know your enemy to win battles. Must admit that when you first came onboard, I really think you are a bit 'ding dong' with all you funny posts but quite quickly see that you 'you3 liao4', woo liao, or got substance from your more serious posts. At the same time I actually quite like your 'ding dong' posts as they provide entertainment. Cannot write as beautifully as you lah...so got to stop here. Best wishes. Cheers! |

yepyep, godpa, totally agree with you. i did my calculations when i was 21 already. That even if you're good in your job and work til you retire, you'll likely never make enough for old age, to say nothing of being wealthy. which was why i started investing. a simple 10K invested at 21 yrs old for 40 years at a modest 15% pa returns you cumulative $2.7 mil at 61. This excludes what you will put into market from your salary. Did consider biz, but it's difficult when you're working two/three jobs, and investing on sideline too. :( |

hm...ok da gege, in case i'm scaring all the 30-something and 40-something year olds now that ppl of my age are taking away all your jobs.... let me just say that i'm not typical of my generation. Most of those my age will be a) spending beyond their means b) in credit card debt c) unhappy in their jobs but not daring to change it d) don't read the news at all, and know nothing of what is going on in the world around them. don't even talk of old monuments etc. They aren't even aware of the iraq situation, or closer to home, who our key ministers are. it's not that i think i'm better than them. in fact i wish i could be as closeted and cossetted as them. But i had to be who i am simply to survive, so that's just that to it. believe rogue_trader will tell you pretty much the same thing. and haha. yes. sorry. but as the chinese saying goes: du3 po1 shang4 wu2 fu4 zi3. (on the gambling table there's no father-son relationship). When it comes to the crunch for job hunting: if you ask for 9k as your salary, i'll ask for 8k. if you ask for 5, i'll ask for 4. if you ask for 2.5, i'll ask for 2. And i'll do more work in the bargain, cheerfully. That is the PRC mentality, which is mine too. That's how i keep earning even in bad times. |

hm. godpa, don't bother so much with what other ppl say lah. remember that it was me who asked you to be my and bunnie's godpa, and not the other way around. always remember that elves are free spirits, no one can force a decision on us. it will always be of our own volition. east or west coast: west only bukit timah and orchard area (strictly speaking these are north/NW). East might have more potential tho 'cos hasn't really run up yet. plus, elf loves the sea. if you buy in east i could help you watch the place. hehe. :P in terms of rentals: west tends to be working singles, east tends to be families. so if buying in the west, small condos might be better; east, buy landed house? |

geojam, Property in an old housing estate.....55+ year old...single storey...semiD.....but renovated (not extensively) about 6 years ago....move in cdtn...so can rent out. without spending too much. Basically, pay only for land.....Rental yield may not be good....3+% at best...but use mainly CPF $$$ which is untouchable by decree and earning 2.5%. But east coast, west coast is also good......anyway, by the time we squeeze 6.5 mil ppl in our 'Little Red Dot, any available space will be considered a premuim. So, hope many high net worth ppl, will be willing to pay high high price for my little plot of real estate and make it their mansion. elf, 'Tackle' is the 'Ah Beng' terminlology for wooing.....so, not offence meant. Good post on globalisation..... see!? geojam, how can old guys like us compete with these young up and coming people like elfie, who are so in tune with the world around us and who can express themselves so eloquently. I, being brought up in an 'Ah Beng' type of environment...was never interested in things that don't affect my rice bowl....like old buildings, monuments...etc...and even if I do, I can never express in the style that elfie did.. |

hm. how globalisation will affect mine and future generation. Make it brief, globalisation style of soundbites: 1) no such thing as an indispensable worker. 2) no such thing as an iron ricebowl. 3) rise to the top by 35 or you'll be retrenched in your 40s. 4) vertical rise in career from cradle to grave is near impossible: need to have transferable, lateral skills to survive. 5) Be willing to jump ship. The idea of loyalty to your company is myth perpetuated by the companies themselves. The romanticism of 'ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country', is just that, myth. When it comes to survival, every man for himself. Don't expect your company to keep you in times of leanness. 6) No such thing as "ah, new tech, the old ways are better." method to survive: 1) always hold down more than one job: have more than one stream of income. 2) Always have a second job offer open. 3) Pick up lateral, transferable skills: what always matters: the ability to speak well, write well, present well. 4) Do (3) so you can do this: jump laterally between different industries. This way, if the industry you're in is down, you have a second option. 5) Be willing to do shit work. That's how you increase your value in a market where ppl are too proud to do things because 'this is beneath me'. 6) Gain goodwill. Networking is the most important thing they never teach you in school. 7) Learn more languages. Elf speaks 4 (to varying degrees of competency). That is not enough. I want at least 6 in three years time. |

Well said my Goddaughter. That is why i picked u as my goddaughter, who cares what ppl say that i q up to be ur godpa. However i am not as old as ppl think. Globalisation, like it or not,is here to stay.Besides globalisation there is also this aspect of fast pace technology change. If ppl do not keep up with tech changes, they just become obsolete. For a small size country like spore,it is unfortunate things like 30 years have to go.Here, cos of more land space,it has not come to be that bad. The other the TV programme on how doctors in India q up to work as telemarketing and overseas call centre cos they are paid more than being a practising doctor. And as telemarketers, they have to work long and irregular hours. So how u think globalisation will affect ur generation and the future generation? My opinion is if u cannot win them, join them.By investing in those companies in India or China as shareholders. Another way is to a venture capitalist. btw, chinkiasu, stuff about the bull.I tried to figure it out.I think he is trying to say get some men to chase u or something like that. I do not get u?what hitch u off and nobody child??? Sound dutch to me. cheers |

geojam, For the 'Little Red Dot', globilisation is not a choice....it is a must. For me, I try to capitalise and benefit in whatever way I can. Today, I am benefitting from the stock mkt.....I've got the time to track the market to my benefit and unlike in the past, the internet provides all the information you need to make informed decisions. I remember past couple of years when oil prices (and pump prices) went up relentlessly....my friends were complaining about the higher costs (petrol, utilities). Instead of fretting, I went in heavy on oil related stocks....to pay for the higher costs. Today, the capital gains more than covers these cost increases for years to come. Its somewhat like practising taichi....'ai lak' (dodge) and use the outside force to your advantage. Today, properties are on uptrend....govt has announced its intention to increase population from the current 4 mill to 6.5 mill. Demand for space is bound to increase....so, I recently committed to a landed property....that's why bullets for stocks running abit low these day. Anyway, now wait for capital appreciation....then bail out at the appropriate time and hopefully by then, can become a 'QUITTER' from this, by then, heavily overcrowded, 'Little Red Dot' and join you in the land of milk and honey...ha ha ha. As for tax....Spore is much friendlier.....no tax on capital gains, no tax on interests, and until recently, I got rebates on divident tax (damn that amendment in the law). But, other taxes are high....e.g. cars, road tax...but again, the choice is yours ...to own or not to own; to own a merc or a economical Jap car. |
