Wow,so many posting since i sign off.Good man, nice to be among friends. Giant,My Mother in law lives in marine parade and she still lives there. So i know MP quite well. But my mum lives somewhere near Peace centre.Giant, the STI today not too good but SPC still holding well leh.I mean so far,not sure afternoon session. I-tan888,Wow throw urine!I never had yet experience that tho.but i kena alot of abusive. Two things i always do.One carry a stick of some sort.Even when i go for my evening walk.Reason,is to defence yourself against these situtation and against fierce dogs. Two,always get your middle finger ready,if anything show then the finger.haha.There are always the good, bad and ugly ppl all over the world. Nowadays, the four letter word is no more a dirty word in australia.U can say it to the police officier,etc...and get away with it. So even the mute and deaf have already come up with their version of four letter word and their version of dick head etc...Very very funny action.U should see it to have a good laugh. I-tan888,what is enough to retire on?When u have too much,u worried how to grow it and if u have kid like me,worried to make sure the next generation can wisely grow or maintenance it. The last thing we want is to see headline in Straits times about family fighting over money.Very sad. fairgal,I agree with u that racism is everywhere. This is my opinion only, whenever in spore i get to meet my family, friends etc...the opinion they talk about is amounting to racism in australia. But u see,we are asians we do not voice or do aggressive things like the white supremists do.We just avoid the "foreigners" ppl in the streets or buses.Just my opinion only. eastonbay,i wish i can play golf. Here it so much cheaper to play and join the club.My brother in law will come to play here once every so often. He taugh me how to play, but not much interest tho. I only like to go to my club for gym, suana, and spa and massage. yongjiu, welcome back.I am sure my goddaughter cannot wait to have dinner with u over a glass of nice wine.rite Elf? just joking. Bunnie, with today bloodbath, maybe something good to buy for keep? Just a thought. lastly,Elf,what is your second job?or third job?Careful,do not burn both end of the candle,so the saying goes. cheerrs everbody. |

Hi EastonBay, You know during our trip from LA to Las Vegas, the bus stopped at a factory outlet. Like you said, they have all those branded things, some are factory rejects though. Bought a pair of Timberland shoes and when we returned to the hotel at night, realized that it's Made-In-China. Come all the way to the States to buy something Made-In-China. Silly right? But anyway, China is now the production house for the world, so how to complain? Also, many of the products in the factory outlets are from China, Philippines, Indonesia, etc, as well. When I stayed in Italy for work commitment, I found that many China Chinese, especially those from Sichuan province, are there to open Chinese restaurants. They are all very cunning business people. They make good money expeditiously with their restaurants and then very quickly, they opened small shoes and leather goods factories. Thereafter, they get more mainlanders to come over to work for them (cheaply) and at the same time enticing them with PRs applicability. That's Globalisation I'd say. There are also the Negros, but I find them not so entrepreneurial. They would rather sell pirated goods along the streets (eg; in Milan, Venice) and risk getting chased and caught by the polizia (police). |

1_tan888, just outside Boston, there is a super big factory outlet that your wife would go ga-ga. She names it, they have it at this place called Wrentham Village Premium Outlet. Over 100 well known brand names like Timberland, Polo Ralph Lauren, Gap, Calvin Klein, Benetton etc etc etc. A typical Singaporean needs about 2-3 days for this place alone. Must warn you first, if you bring your wife there, it will be a bloodbath on your pocket! This is one place that even man/male will really become a shopaholic! Bought Clark Shoes there for US$20. Just take a quick peek with the links. Make sure you don't show it to your wife!! http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/store_listing.asp?id=10 |

Hi EastonBay, Thanks for your recommendation. Will take note. However, both my wife and I like shopping leh. When overseas, we usually shopped a lot, and then come back to see many useless things we had bought. When we were in Europe, she complained: "come here to see all these old buildings?" Well, I guess that's part of modernisation, especially in Singapore. Sorry I don't play golf. Rich man's game lah. But I also heard that many businesses are concluded at the golf course. They are especially the favourites of Japanese businessman. I also don't have membership to Country Clubs. Not really practical for me lah. My condo's swimming pool, imagine I'd only swam thrice in 2 years. |

Good day everyone! Racism is everywhere. It's a matter of whether you are in luck or out of luck! As an overseas undergrad many years ago, I encountered a bad one from an elderly lady at a supermarket within 2 weeks of arrival there. I cried. Then I realised that the younger generation is not so bad. I guess the older generation cannot accept Asians and other nationalities because firstly, we are alien to them. Secondly, we are a threat to them. This is the way they think. Younger people interact with us, friendship blooms, and they accept us. Still, some younger ones may still be racists too, due to upbringing, or simply their personal unpleasant experience with Asians. Asians are usually very hardworking, never say die attitude preferred by employers. I suppose when we visit or stay in a foreign land or even at home , we respect the people around us, and be more conscious of their feeling as well. Those who visit Malaysia, please don't shop, and at the same time, say "so cheap!" repeatedly. According to one Malaysian uncle I spoke to, they dislike that kind of tone and attitude. Elf, I am not going anywhere near Robinsons for the next 1 week. If you see that granny in the wheelchair, let me know. She is at the first pillar at Centrepoint from the direction of Bee Chun Heng. Just wondering how she got there as well. |

Hi, I'm back. Had some guests in my house last night and hence, no time to go online. geojam, Thanks for your sharing on Australia. Wow, you'd sure made a very early move to Australia. So, I believe nowadays you'd pronounce "good-dai" instead of "goodday". You know when we (a group of us in the tour) were walking on our way to Chinatown in Perth one evening and at a traffic junction, a car suddenly drove up to us, wound down its windows and those rowdy boys inside shouted to us: "You Asians, go back to your country, we don't welcome you here". I've also heard from a friend of mine that his group suffered worse. They threw urine at them whilst also at a traffic junction, also in Perth. Well, I'm sure there's also the good side of Australia. Afterall, there are all kinds of people in this world, even in Singapore. Once on a flight to Heathrow, UK, I'd talked to my neighbouring seating partner. She's quite an elderly Australian and after relating to her our bad experience in Perth, she encouraged me to consider staying for a longer term in Australia, so that I can get to know their warmness and cordial hospitality. Anyway, now that you say things are very expensive down under, I think I'll have to redirect my radar. That's why I'm still seriously considering Malaysia. And with no children, it's really not that difficult to move anyway,..... no schools to worry, no languages to worry, etc. Everything boils down to money. Have money will travel, but like Jack Neo says, "Money Not Enough" leh. Hah, don't be so greedy I tell myself. We came with nothing and we'll also go with nothing. One thing I really "pei-fu" you for using vulgarities at work. Try that here and in no time you'll get sued or end up writing police statements. Singapore really has no place for the elderly. It's a conducive environment for those youngsters (eg: elf, bunbun) because they are young, sufficiently educated, have the energy to "piah" and earn good monies for many more years. For us old birds, it's time for hibernation. lausk22, Don't say "blasted" leh. We all here share our experiences and also want to wish everyone well here. Everyone makes mistakes once in a while (and I do as well). The most important thing is to acknowledge your mistake, learn from it, don't repeat it and move on. I'm sure iPunter will be back in this thread in no time. We all welcome him, don't we? Elf, I also "pei-fu" you. Working a full-time job, having some part time jobs and still have time to invest in shares, trade for your friends, and most important of all, posting in forums, which I really enjoyed reading them. I must hand my hat to you for finding all these times, especially analyzing the earnings reports, share movements, etc. Oh by the way, don't worry about Allgreen. I've been keeping it for 8 to 9 years already, so what's so difficult on keeping it for another few years? Furthermore, I'm getting dividends of slightly more than $5k annually from them for the last few years. Though that's nothing to shout about compared to my capital investment for AG, but it still beats the miserable 0.35% interest from DBS. How come you are so keen on Hawaii? Never been there before, so I cannot comment. However, I do like North America. My wife and I had been to California and she'd even went to San Francisco. I myself had been to Cincinnati and Chicago (but just transit only). Plan to visit the eastern side (NY and Washington) the next time, if time permits. I'd like your charitable nature :>) bunbun, Do take your heed of your godpa's (geojam) advice on contra trades. It's not necessary that we need to trade everyday. Whatever it is, always have a Stop Loss limit. In this way, you can make more gains for good stocks and limit your losses for laggards, and save your bullets for better stocks the next round. Good luck. |

Hey elf, I buy tissue paper from those peddlers too but what I can't stand are those peddlers who go in pairs and one of them pretends to be blind. These people, in my view, are no better than the old-NKF mentality... they take advantage of Singaporeans' genuine care and concern for the disabled. I have personally seen the "blind" person negotiate a complex series of twists and turns (with stairs included) in a crowded hawker center without using her walking stick even once! |

yes you are absolutely right...The earliest preserved description of elves comes from Norse mythology... and I think these tales are spread by the vikings to Ireland (Dublin is founded by Vikings). The elf that you associated Ireland with is the Leprechaun. In Irish legend, Leprechauns are aloof elves who live in Ireland on their own, spending their time making shoes. They possess hidden pots of gold and are extremely honest. The saying goes that it means luck to see a leprechaun and if caught, the leprechaun will reveal the whereabouts of his treasure. However, if the captor's eyes leave the leprechaun (and often he tricks them into looking away), he vanishes and all hopes of finding the treasure are lost. But our resident Elf is I think German... Elfen is the german word for elf.. but I should let her tell her story..... |

i think globalisation is not a choice issue... like the stock market forces we cannot fight it but just have to learn to flow with it... the problem is not globalisation but the management of its bad effects... one very critical bad effect is global warming which is a fact.. and we really must do our part to reduce our carbon print.. |

hey hey pple... elf... i think Ireland welcomes elves. dun know why i always associate elves with Ireland. they would be dancing in a circle, holding a pot of gold uncle geojam... were u formerly staying at Marine Parade??? If so, that would make us fellow "Marine Paraders", cos i also stay there. hahaha. btw, now parkway parade very crowded and happening. difficult to find parking space on weekends. fairygal & elf.... during the process of globalisation, i agree with u all that pple get left behind. but compare this to countries which are not so globalised, the vast majority of pple are poor. i think we are so much luckier in Singapore man. cos at least in Singapore, got kind pple like u all to help them. e.g. in poorer parts of india, there are too many poor pple, how to help?? |

heh lausk22, don't stir up any 'soup' la by saying ipunter kenar "blasted". i'm sure godpa's limited words did not constitute a blast. and i'm also very certain I_tan888 wasn't blasting him too. and i always enjoy ipunter's jesting, so my limited vocabulary/words cannot equate to a blast. oh, finally, i can agree with you on something. i agree that ipunter ususally very careful with words. so careful that he can be complimenting one party (e.g. I_tan888) and yet on the other hand, tried to suan godpa for taking other people's comments @ face value. this kinda lingustic skill not easy to learn definitely *smiles* same goes for you too leh, lausk22. said elf attracts old mens' attention, all q up to be her godpa, but alas, she only have one godpa (geojam) leh till now. tsk tsk, misled me into interpreting your comments that perhaps you are one of those old men who wish to be her alternative godpa *smiles* alamak, im really fortunate here to learn TA AND lingustic skills from forumers like yourself. |

hey fairygal... just saw the last part of your post abt the old lady at robinson's....never saw her before, but yea, that's one of the effects of globalisation. Ppl get left behind. :( that's why quite a lot of poorer countries are against it. they were bankrupted by the rich nations. in many ways, globalisation is just an excuse for rich countries to rob the poor. to give an idea of numbers: Mexico: after globalisation, the % of ppl living under the poverty line grew by 50%. Africa (always raped by the western powers for its copper, cobalt, diamonds, gas, oil etcetc, aided and abetted by corrupt regimes--most of whom are funded by westerners, mind you): their debt ballooned 4x and rates of AIDS, basic sanitation diseases etcetc all exploded. I could go on, but heh, let's not lah. closer to home what measures income disparity is known as the Gini coefficient. that has upped from 0.49 to 0.52. meaning the rich are becoming richer, the poor are becoming poorer. That's why the govt hires like 50% of all grads, and our bureaucracy is bloated. if not, we'd not be able to keep employment rates so high. it's artificial, but it works. i tend to buy tissue from old women peddling them too (as i believe you do too, you have a kind heart. :) )....and sometimes end up with no money for my own lunch. ahahhaa. i don't buy from able men and all that tho! think if you're able you should work. |
