Is it true to say that CPI will at least in line with expectations as wal mart have a profit yesterday?? Hope i am correct and let's see GREEN after closing.   Very confident that the minutes from FED will be good news. No recession when G.Bush still around. After election, there will be any assurance though.  Let's X fingers ok? huat AR

x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	limhpp, i think that you got it wrong here when pple are taking profit, it means that there are more sellers than buyers. my personal view is to stay on the sidelines and wait for opportunities to open up. Green8, the FED cannot keep lowering down interest rates. more specific measure to address the problem is needed

x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	louis_leecs, u are spot on. the DOW merely dropped 0.09 percent, relatively unchanged from previous session. i dun think the FED should continue to cut rate, cos everytime they cut rates, oil prices increase. maybe they should be more industry specific in their action perhaps 20% tax rebate for all financial companies??

x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	Wall Street gave up a big early advance and closed mixed Tuesday after oil prices closed above $100 for the first time and stoked fears that inflation will stymie an already troubled economy. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 10.99, or 0.09 percent, to 12,337.22 after being up more than 150 points earlier in the session.  FED dun cut rates... they fear.. FED cut rates.. cause inflation.. they fear too.. KNN.... they got study financial or not..

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Wal-Mart said Tuesday profit rose 4% in the latest quarter, helped by strong international sales. The world's largest retailer said that net income from continuing operations rose to $4.1 billion, or $1.02 a share, in the fourth quarter. Net sales rose 8.3% to $106.3 billion, up from $99.1 billion in the same period last year. The company's earnings were in line with Wall Street's expectations. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had expected the Bentonville, Ark.-based company to earn $1.02 per share during the quarter.Wal-Mart (WMT, Fortune 500) recently released a weaker-than-expected 0.5% gain in same-store sales for January but still beat rival Target (TGT, Fortune 500), which posted a 1.1% decline in same-store sales for the month. Other major retailers will report earnings soon, including J.C. Penney (JCP, Fortune 500) on Thursday, followed by Target and Sears (SHLD, Fortune 500) next week

LONDON (CNNMoney.com) -- U.S. stocks looked set for an upbeat start Tuesday as investors returned from the holiday break and awaited earnings from retail behemoth Wal-Mart. At 5:21 a.m. ET, Nasdaq and S&P futures were higher, indicating opening gains for Wall Street. U.S. markets were closed Monday for President's Day. Wal-Mart (WMT, Fortune 500), the world's largest retailer, is due to report earnings before the market open. Analysts are expecting the company to post earnings of $1.02 a share - a 10% jump from the year-ago period. Revenue is forecast to rise 8% to $106.9 billion. Among stocks to watch, troubled bond insurer Ambac (ABK) is discussing a plan to raise $2 billion in capital to protect is sterling triple-A rating, according to the Wall Street Journal. The union representing pilots at Delta (DAL, Fortune 500) and Northwest (NWA, Fortune 500) have agreed to a deal to consolidate membership under a merged carrier, the Detroit News reported. The move removes a major hurdle to a merger of the two airlines.

Big gains for UK banks after British government said Sunday it will nationalize Northern Rock temporarily until it can find a buyer. Barclays +7.6% while Royal Bank of Scotland +2.9%, HSBC Holdings +3.2%. UK banking sector also starts reporting FY earnings in earnest this week; "Some highly attractive yields are likely to be confirmed, offering a possible catalyst to performance," said Gareth Williams, strategist at ING. Potential Rio Tinto owner BHP Billiton +4.3%, plus Anglo American +2.8%. European banks showed gains, Credit Suisse +3.2% as Qatar PM said state has accumulated stock in Swiss bank. Pockets of weakness also were evident; IKB Deutsche Industriebank fell 24% as German lender unveiled plans to sell 1.5 billion Euros in shares as part of government-sponsored bailout in attempt to recover from subprime crisis. Societe Generale +0.6% despite rogue trading scandal, as investors eye several possible new developments. Pan-European Dow climbed +1.9%, UK FTSE 100 +2.8%, Germany's DAX 30 +2%, French CAC-40 +1.9%.
