x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	Looks like the goof-up happened during the SEC filing of the stake in ML, one of the fields entered was erroneous as mentioned in the Straits Times on Saturday. MFFAIS took that, put it on the website, and the rest of the world follows. Rule of thumb - don't be the first gungho buyer of a stock during a dip. Bottoms will confirm themselves.

x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	If I were to buy 86.95 million shares of Merrill Lynch, I wouldn't buy all at one price, Assuming I bought at US$48, I could buy 5 million at US$48, 5 million at US$38, 5 million at US$28 and 5 million at US$18 and 5 miilion at US$8, and I have just bought 25 million shares and still have about 60 miilion shares to go...

Calling this a mischievous market speculation, Temasek spokeswoman Myrna Thomas said: 'Investors and interested public are advised to refer only to official sources of information for announcements on major transactions.' This comment was made in response to rumours triggered by an online report, MFFAIRS (Mutual Fund Facts About Individual Stocks), which had erroneously said that Temasek sold off 86.95 million shares on July 22, by assuming Temasek's original stakeholdings in Merrill is double that amount to begin with. The report triggered a wave of e-mail messages among the broking community, and speculation was rife on the implication of this said divestment. But Temasek has not reduced its shareholding in Merrill Lynch. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings made by Temasek on July 22 also showed that it only holds 86.95 million shares on July 11, the same amount as at May 15. The Singapore sovereign fund had invested a total of US$5 billion in Merrill Lynch in December and February at US$48 a share, at a time when sovereign funds from Asia and the Middle East were propping up global banks reeling from sub-prime related credit losses. The erroneous report of a share sale by Temasek came after Merrill Lynch posted a fourth consecutive quarter in the red over the weekend. Merrill's US$4.65 billion loss for its second quarter ended June 30 means that it has piled up US$19 billion in losses over the past year - which works out to about US$52 million a day. But fund managers said that given Temasek's long-term view in its investments, the current short-term market uncertainties are unlikely to trigger a divestment of its stake in Merrill Lynch. 'Short-term volatility isn't likely to result in them taking any particular type of adjustments that are in response to market drops,' said Wong Sui Jau, general manager of Fundsupermart.

More or less explains why sometimes news incites a market reaction that is totally opposite to what is expected - welcome to the mad mad world of stocks.

x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	heya 178. no prob. i'm not sure how official the MFFAIS data is, either, which was why i had earlier asked when was their data published. to get to the truth of the matter, one needs to get ML's substantial shareholder's list, or filings with the DJIA/whoever is in charge of the US exchanges. i've checked ML's website, they don't provide the info. edit: ooh, you're right, they changed the info. wonder who's playing games. LOL. anyway, when all's said and done, it doesn't affect us either way. get angry also no point. so might as well don't bother. :D

Temasek came out today a statement saying the online article about the ML sales is erroneous and asking the public to always refer to official sources for sizable transactions. Btw, not sure if MFFAIS can be considered "official"?? I kind of doubtful of MFFAIS data because it keeps vacillating on its numbers even intraday. I just checked an hour ago it showed Temasek's ML stake "No Change". Any idea where  the official sources that Temasek refer to that we can authenticate? sorry for spoiling your friday nite.

x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	possible, 178investors. it still doesn't explain the filing tho. the figures don't tally in either case. altho, shorting on US financial stocks has been banned for 30 days, so even if they pass the rumor, it doens't do them any good except allows them to accumulate ML at cheaper prices. which again is counterintuitive, since after the 30 day ban is over, you can be sure they'd be back at work again. it's just odd lah. either way doesn't tally. anyway, it's the weekend! heck with the market!

x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	Lately, many hedge funds suffering huge losses betting on oil (long) and financials (short). Some people out there could been passing unsubstantiated claim of Temasek selling ML. Could it be those passing the false info, hope to profit from ML's fall and also profiting from the USD/Euro, Yen market to push the dollar lower. As we have seen, a weakening greenback usually trigger oil to rally and financials to fall. Don't you feel some people are out to manipulate the market with this false info. (Can you imagine if Temasek was a listed company and with such falsehood, many traders and investors would be shorting/dumping Temasek stocks bringing it down. Hopefully from this episode, we can learn there are many mischievious people out there wanting to profit at any cost and means.)

x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	lol! eh, no lah baseer. the website also stated that their calculation of profit/loss is based upon the px between the date filed and the current px. it may not be the buy px of the institution. buy px of temasek was US$48. anyhow, weekend's here! no point tearing hair out; what's done is done, and not like we have any power to do anything anw. just airing kaobehs. hehe. may as well go play for the weekend and be happy.

x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	well, if the mffais website can be trusted, temasek did sell some of both merril and mylan then. but i think the ML sale was long ago, and not as much as said. the nos don't tally for it. baseer, filing with SEC on jan 3rd '08 was that Temasek bought 91,666,666 shares of ML. Stakes unchanged since Mar 08, "still owns 86.9 million" means sold 4.7 mil before Mar. gah. whatever. not like we have a choice anyway. happy weekend, peeps. :)

The comments come after market rumours Temasek had sold more than half of its shares in the US bank prompted a dip in the US dollar against the yen and the euro. A source briefed on the situation said since March 31 Temasek had not reduced its shareholding in Merrill. Temasek is still holding Merrill shares and there is no change, a second source said. Temasek said in a statement it had no comment on market speculation. The Singapore group invested US$5 billion in Merrill Lynch in December and February at US$48 a share, at a time when sovereign funds from Asia and the Middle East were propping up global banks reeling from sub-prime-related credit losses. It's a political site by nature, so read and take with a grain of salt.
