Japan's economy ends recession in 2Q on export rebound, but weak consumption clouds outlook

TOKYO (AP) -- Japan's economy climbed out of yearlong recession in the second quarter, the government said Monday, expanding 3.7 percent at an annual pace and joining Germany, France and other regions that appear to be emerging from the global financial crisis.

it looks like very terrible that SSE fell from its' high 3400 to 2870

that also cause Hongkong market down, STI follow Hongkong dowan also!

Singapore July exports grew 6.1 per cent compared to last month

Singapore's non oil exports fell 8.5 per cent in July over the same period last year, dropping the least in ten months, latest data from IE Singapore showed on Monday

Electronic shipments fell 14 per cent in July, after a revised 22 per cent decline in June. The decrease was largely due to lower exports of integrated circuits and computer parts.

Non-electronic shipments decreased by 4.8 per cent following a 4.7 fall in the previous month. The contraction was led by less exports of petrochemicals, electrical machinery and heating and cooling equipment.

Compared to the previous month, July exports however grew 6.1 per cent on a seasonally adjusted basis. The fall is also smaller than the market's expectation of 11.5 per cent, as drugs exports jumped. July was the 15th month of annual contractions.

Aug. 17 (Bloomberg) – European and Asian stocks fell as Japan’s economy grew less than economists estimated, while lower metals and oil dimmed the earnings outlook for commodities producers.
China’s Shanghai Composite Index tumbled the most in nine  months and U.S. index futures slid.
    Swedbank AB decreased 9.1 percent as the largest bank in the Baltics said it will raise 15 billion kronor ($2.1 billion) selling shares. Sony Corp., the maker of the PlayStation 3 game console, slid 4.1 percent in Tokyo. BHP Billiton Ltd., the
largest mining company, retreated 3.1 percent as copper fell.
    Europe’s Dow Jones Stoxx 600 Index lost 1.2 percent, extending a 0.8 percent drop last week that snapped four weeks of gains. A 43 percent rebound since March 9 has left the regional measure valued at 40.2 times the profits of its companies, near the  most expensive since September 2003, weekly data compiled by Bloomberg show.
    The MSCI Asia Pacific Index tumbled 3.1 percent, its steepest drop in March. Japan’s gross domestic product expanded at an annual 3.7 percent pace in the three months ended June 30, following an 11.7 percent decline in the previous quarter, the  Cabinet Office said. The median estimate of 22 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News was for 3.9 percent growth.
    “We don’t believe that the underlying macro-economic fundamentals of the G3 economies, that’s Japan, the United States and the European Union, are sufficient for us to feel that from now we are going to have the beginning of a secular bull-equity  market,” said Andrew Freris, an investment strategist at BNP Paribas SA. “Investors are beginning to get used to the fact that there isn’t going to be a significant and fast recovery,” he told Bloomberg Television in Hong Kong.
    China, U.S. Futures
    China’s Shanghai Composite sank 5.8 percent, the steepest slump since Nov. 18, as a loss at Yunnan Copper Industry Co. stoked concern this year’s rally was overdone.
    Foreign direct investment in China fell 35.7 percent in July, a 10th straight month of declines, the Commerce Ministry said in Beijing today, as companies stalled expansion plans amid the global financial crisis.
    Standard & Poor’s 500 Index futures slid 1.5 percent. Colonial BancGroup Inc., the Alabama lender facing a criminal probe, had its banking operations closed by regulators and taken over by BB&T Corp. in the biggest failure since Washington Mutual  Inc. collapsed last year. Regulators also shut two companies in Arizona, one in Las Vegas and one in Pittsburgh Aug. 14, pushing the tally of failed U.S. banks this year to 77.
    Home Sales, Swedbank
    U.K. home sellers lowered asking prices in August by the most in eight months as banks kept up the squeeze on credit, Rightmove Plc said. The average cost of a home fell 2.2 percent to 222,762 pounds ($367,808) after gaining 0.6 percent in July, the  owner of the U.K.’s biggest residential property Web site said today. Prices in London dropped 3.8 percent.
    Swedbank declined 9.1 percent to 60 kronor. The bank is seeking to bolster its reserves with its second rights offer in less than a year as it faces soaring loan losses and provisions in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
    Sony sank 4.1 percent to 2,605 yen. Honda Motor Co., Japan’s second-biggest automaker, fell 3.9 percent to 3,000 yen.
    From the previous quarter, Japan’s economy grew 0.9 percent. Economists predicted 1 percent. The winner of the country’s Aug. 30 general election will have to grapple with unemployment that’s approaching a record high as companies including Nikon  Corp. and NEC Electronics Corp. cut costs.
    BHP, Rio Tinto
    BHP lost 2.6 percent to 1,513 pence in London. Rio Tinto Group, the world’s third-biggest mining company, slid 3.3 percent to 2,278.5 pence. Copper, lead, nickel and tin declined on the London Metal Exchange.
    The world’s biggest pension funds have lost confidence in stocks as the best long-term investment, cutting holdings or leaving them unchanged during the steepest rally since the 1930s.
    Funds overseeing money for California teachers and public workers, Dutch government retirees and South Korean private- sector employees reduced their target weightings for equities this year, data compiled by Bloomberg show. The rest of the 10  largest kept them the same.

SHANGHAI, Aug 17, 2009 (AFP) - Chinese shares closed down 5.79 percent on
Monday, extending last week’s decline amid continued worries over the state of
the domestic economy and corporate earnings, dealers said.
The Shanghai Composite Index, which covers A and B shares, was down 176.34
points at 2,870.63 on turnover of 137.5 billion yuan (20.1 billion dollars).
The key index has shed 6.6 percent in the past week.

Dont need to worry abt Big bank close shop, so long got someone takeover, market happy,

and then we got FDIC, to take care, and if the bank is too big like JP Morgan, you Big Ben to take care...

actually, this shd be the way, let those loser go under, just like stock, Ben and Obama shd cut loser and no only keep winner, but boost it up...( like we do here, buy more for winner, cut loser fast)

but what is worrying is the failure is broad base, and the default is wide spread, then, only God can save us!!!!....hope coming one , is not so serious....no one know really,,,

but since we dont know, we assume the worst case scenario, and prepare for the worse, but hope for the best.....
