Buying up again reminds me fondly of dancer Nicolas Davas, who in his day bought in heavily in stages, as the price of his stocks gradually rise and became very very rich. But that I believe was done in the midst of a roaring bull market when the general direction was up. To do that is an uncertain market, or worst, in a downtrending market, would be simply suicidal, assuming one can tell the trend. |

Worldwide sales of semiconductors rose in January on strength in consumer confidence, the Semiconductor Industry Association said on Monday. Sales increased 9.2% to $21.47 billion from a year earlier, but fell 1.2% from December levels. "Purchasers of personal computers continue to reap large benefits from the steady decline in prices of semiconductors achieved through advances in technology," SIA President George Scalise said in a statement. Desktop and laptop computer system prices fell more than 9% in 2006, according to the SIA, which forecast continued improvement in market conditions in the year ahead. "Concerns about inventories in the previous quarter appear to have worked themselves out, and the forecast for unit growth in the range of 10 to 15% for 2007 appears to be realistic," Scalise said. Sales of DRAMs led the industry both in total sales and in yoy growth in January, with US$3.6 billion in sales and revenues jumping 72%compared with January 2006. Chartered Semiconductor and STATS ChipPAC rose, as investors hunted for cheap valuations in the semiconductor sector. "The stocks are trading close to their book values, so they're now at bargain prices," said CIMB-GK analyst Khoo Chen Hsung. Chartered Semiconductor was trading at 1.53x its book value, while STATS ChipPAC was trading at 1.36x, according to Reuters data. |

Semiconductor stocks rallied on Friday, on hopes that Apple's upcoming feature-heavy iPhone would fuel demand for companies that supply components for the new mobile phone. A dealer at a local stock broker said that chip firms may have to ramp up output to meet the demand for Apple's iPhone, which would be launched in the middle of this year in the United States. He added that Singapore-listed semiconductor stocks had also gained on a rising Nasdaq index, which added 1% overnight to hit a new six-year high. STATS, CSM and UTAC are all up. |

Think market expect a lower Q4 for CSM after below 2 semi-con companies reported their earnings today. Can't wait to see CSM's Q4 guidance next Tuesday (12th Dec) to see if the increased capacity will boost it back to 1.40. Shiok! -------------- National Semiconductor said second-quarter net income fell, as revenue declined, to $91.4 million, or 27 cents a share, from $114.7 million, or 32 cents a share, during the same period in the prior year. The company sees sequential revenue in the third quarter decreasing 8% to 11%. --------------- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSM) reported Friday its unconsolidated revenue in November was NT$24.71 billion, lower than NT$27.52 billion in November last year. For the 11 months ended Nov. 30, the world's largest contract chipmaker by revenue, posted revenue of NT$291.51 billion, TSMC said during a teleconference. TSMC's January-November revenue was 23% higher than NT$237.17 billion in the year-earlier period, it said.
The company also reported consolidated revenue of NT$25.06 billion for November, which was 7.3% lower than the previous month's NT$27.03 billion.
It didn't comment on the figures.

Close call, Forrest .... Its ended down 1.5% to 9.01 last nite in Nasdaq. Let's see if it can go above 1.40 mark today in SGX. Wah, if the rumors of new plant in China prove to be true, market will react negatively to this expansion. Read from its Q1 or Q2 reports that they are looking at new Fab 8, if biz picks up - but no mention of China plant. |
