The only set-back for these coys are the fast growing competitors from Thailand (as mentioned by Nostradamus) and also M'sia with cheaper fees. But fortunately, S'pore has good brand names in this sector. Cheers!!!! |

Singapore has engaged US consulting firm McKinsey and Company to map out strategies to attract more foreign patients, also known as medical tourists, to Singapore. McKinsey's expertise will help Singapore craft out the most appropriate ways to identify and meet the needs of medical tourists, the ministry of health (MOH) said in a statement. Singapore aims to attract 1m medical tourists by 2012 but it faces stiff competition within Asia mainly from Thailand, where the kingdom is also aggressively working on becoming the choice venue for foreign visitors seeking affordable, quality medical care. MOH said the "international dimension of healthcare services is a dynamic area quite different from the challenges of providing services to a domestic population. "MOH would like to collaborate with international subject matter experts so as to strengthen our national competitive strategies as well as draw on their relevant experience and expertise in developing healthcare strategies specific to medical tourism worldwide." McKinsey was awarded the contract worth $2.15 m early this month after a tender process, the MOH said. Medical tourism is multi-billion dollar industry in Asia with several countries in the region drawing on their affordable but high medical service standards to woo more foreign patients. The Straits Times reported S'pore drew 374,000 medical tourists in 2005, up 17% from 320,000 the previous year. |

Parkway Holdings (run Mount Elizabeth, Gleneagles and Eastshore Hospital), and Thomson Medical (to a lesser extent) are companies that operate in the same field. |

Does anyone know of other comparable stocks are there in this sector? I was hoping to do a comparison of a few medical tourism related stocks and then pick the best. |

Net profit for hospital services grew 46% yoy underpinned by higher patient volume and improved operating efficiencies. Healthcare services also did well, partly because more clinics have been converted to medical centres providing other specialists' care and diagnostic services in addition to primary care. As a result, the clinic network has been able to attract more private patients, which grew in excess of 10%. Its healthcare insurance arm incurred a net loss of about $0.4m in 1H06. Nevertheless, it may break-even sometime this year and start contributing positively to its bottom-line in FY07. Besides the Jarkata Medical Centre that is due to open in 4Q06, it will set up new Representative Offices in Myanmar, Sri Lanka and India. The main purpose is to serve as a marketing outlet to enable the local doctors to be aware of its capabilities and its hospital facilities back here. Meanwhile, it is also contemplating setting up medical centres in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. Furthermore, it's looking at some possible sites to build an international-class hospital in either Shanghai or Beijing. If everything goes smoothly, the medical centres can be up and ready in the next 1-2 years, whereas the hospital will take more than 2 years. Singapore is positioning itself as a medical tourism hub and the authorities are ambitious of serving 1m foreign patients annually by 2012, generating almost $3mb in revenve. Raffles med will be a prime beneficiary of this important trend. |
