WASHINGTON | WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Senate defeated a Democratic proposal to raise the debt ceiling on Sunday as lawmakers closed in on a deal that would be acceptable to both parties. LOL! Everyday they appear before TV to unleash so much crap (talk) and the media writes sensational crap to generate more buzz called high hopes and fear. What is a test vote huh can somebody tell me the implicit significance? Want to vote to pass the bill well just vote it lah, what is there to trial vote? A rushed deal can come thru with conditions, just what is it going to be? What they mean by a tentative deal? What kind of timeframe to be called tentative?

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Democrats and Republicans are " very close" to reaching a $3 trillion deal on the debt limit, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told CNN's " State of the Union" Sunday. " We had a very good day yesterday," the Kentucky Republican said, adding that the two sides " made dramatic progress." With the deadline to reach a debt ceiling agreement just two days away, congressional leaders and the White House are mulling parts of a tentative deal that would extend the debt limit through next year. A Republican source close to the negotiations told CNN the goal is $3 trillion in savings, and that the deal would include a $2.4 trillion increase in the debt ceiling. Just hours before, two sources familiar with the negotiations told CNN that the framework of a tentative deal to raise the nation's debt ceiling calls for up to $2.8 trillion in total deficit reduction over the next decade. The agreement, still being negotiated by the White House and bipartisan congressional leaders, would allow the debt ceiling to be raised by enough to last at least through the end of 2012. But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, speaking in harsh terms at his own afternoon news conference, said reports of a deal were " not true," criticized Republicans for holding " meaningless press conferences" and accused GOP senators of stymieing any compromise by launching a filibuster against a bill he supported. With McConnell standing a few feet away, Reid said, " I just spent two hours with the president, the vice president, and the agreement is not (coming together) in a meaningful way. WASHINGTON (KABC) -- ABC News has learned that Republicans and the White House have reached a tentative deal to avoid a government default threatened for early next week. According to a source familiar with the negotiations, the deal includes a debt ceiling increase of up to $2.8 trillion and spending cuts of about $1 trillion. A special committee would recommend those cuts before Thanksgiving recess. If Congress does not approve those cuts by late December, automatic across-the-board cuts go into effect, including cuts to defense and Medicare. The deal may not please congressional Democrats or tea partiers. Earlier Saturday, after weeks of intense partisanship, the White House and congressional leaders made a desperate, last-minute stab at compromise. "There are many elements to be finalized...there is still a distance to go," Majority Leader Harry Reid cautioned in dramatic late-night remarks on the Senate floor. Still, his disclosure that "talks are going on at the White House now," coupled with his announcement that progress had been made, offered the strongest indication yet that an economy-crippling default might be averted. | ||||
