Singapore braces for sharply slower growth in 2012

Singapore on Monday predicted sharply lower economic growth of 1.0-3.0 percent in 2012 amid an export slowdown and warned the situation could worsen if Europe's debt woes trigger a global crisis. " This does not factor in downside risks to growth, such as a worsening debt situation or a full-blown financial crisis in the advanced economies," the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) said in a statement releasing the data. " Should these risks materialise, growth in the Singapore economy in 2012 could come in lower than expected," it added. The city-state's 2011 gross domestic product (GDP) growth is estimated at 5.0 percent, down from an all-time high of 14.5 percent in 2010 when the economy was coming off a 0.8 contraction during the 2009 recession. Singapore's open and trade-driven economy is regarded as a bellwether for Asia's exporters, which depend heavily on electronics and other manufactured shipments to North America and Europe for growth. " It looks like the risk is towards the downside," Chua Hak Bin, a Singapore-based economist with Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, said of the implications of Singapore's forecast for the rest of Asia. " The fact that the tech exports were weak will mean other Asian economies will also see tech exports being pulled down," he told AFP. Asia's fate will depend to a large degree on whether Europe can contain its debt crisis which has engulfed large economies including Italy and Spain, according to Chua. Singapore's GDP was valued at Sg$284.6 billion ($219 billion) in 2010, and total trade was more than three times as large. " The longer the European debt crisis drags out with no clear solutions, it will have a negative impact globally," said Selena Ling, an economist with Singapore's Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp. " We are starting to see the impact come through." The MTI said it expects Singapore's electronics industry and other sectors that rely heavily on overseas orders to remain under pressure despite support from Asia's better-performing economies. " Although resilient domestic demand in emerging Asia will provide some support to global demand, it will not fully mitigate the effects of an economic slowdown in the advanced economies," the MTI said. Even the financial-services sector will be affected by heightened uncertainties in the external environment, it added. The forecast came as data released separately Monday by the trade promotion body International Enterprise Singapore showed electronics exports tumbling 17 percent in the third quarter from a year ago. The ministry's downbeat projections for 2012 came as it released third-quarter figures showing GDP grew 6.1 percent, an improvement from 1.0 percent in the second quarter. Singapore is a significant producer of high-end telecommunications and computer-related parts shipped to the rest of the world as well as petrochemical and pharmaceutical products. " Within the manufacturing sector, the electronics cluster is expected to register a lower level of output given the downturn in the global electronics cycle," the MTI said. " This in turn will have knock-on effects on the precision engineering cluster and wholesale trade." |

....traders have been shorting with DOW stocks down more than 5% in the last 3 sessions....similarly for STI...and HSI only down 34pts now....hummmmm

Saw the news somewhere this morning that FOMC will be flexible in the QE. This may mean that there will be a possibility of QE3 if the situation gets worsen!!!!

S& P last downgrade of US rating sent the stock market going down big time from Aug 2.. now they are driving " manual" first and later will switch to " automatic" .....LOL... WASHINGTON (AP) -- Credit rating agency Standard & Poor's says it will not downgrade the U.S. government's credit rating because a Congressional committee failed to come up with a plan to trim deficits by at least $1.2 trillion over the next decade. S& P in August cut its rating of long-term U.S. Treasury securities by one notch from AAA to AA+, the first such downgrade of U.S. government debt in history. In a brief statement Monday, S& P said it did not plan a further downgrade of the rating based on the supercommittee's failure to agree on a plan. But S& P warned that its present rating is based on the expectation that automatic cuts will take effect in January 2013. Some Republicans are vowing to block the defense spending cuts. |

Are Dow Technicals Doing A 2007 Re-run?
History has a strange way of repeating itself. To cap that, it happens when you least expect it. For the past 4 weeks, I have been looking at the chart of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The more I look the more convinced I am that there is a strong resemblance to the chart in 2007. 2007 Subprime Stage 1 late 2007. Market makes a head and shoulder bearish reversal pattern. This indicates that the whole rally is merely a distribution process for Smart Money. Besides the chart pattern, moving averages converge. Stage 2 early 2008. Market tanks and creates a new low. The moving averages invert after a dead cross. They act as resistance. Sentiment becomes very bearish and traders turn short. Stage 3 2008 second quarter. Those shorts lose money as market rallies. In fact the rally brings price to higher high. The entire first quarter resistance turns into a support. Moving averages creep towards a Golden Cross that does not quite make it. Bulls bask in their cleverness at bottom fishing while Bears question why the market can rally despite bad technicals and bad fundamentals. View Full-sized Image  Dow is testing October high, violation should see resumption of fall How the aftermath should be written will be revealed in the next two to three weeks but I hope you follow by now. If this story is truly a replay, we are going to see: 1. Price moves back below October highs and get resisted 2. Concurrent falls in the price of Gold and Oil. Of course for whatever reason such as if the US Federal reserve or the ECB goes into QE mode again or if October highs will remain a support for Dow, then the October rally might continue.
