According to the China Association of National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI), for the first feature, Chinese shipbuilders made a new delivery record and eye-opening performance in 2011. Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) exceeded delivery of 8m-dwt, while DSIC over 6m-dwt, Rongsheng Heavy Industries and New Century Shipbuilding each over 4m-dwt. Also, 22 yards reached over 1m-dwt delivery, up by three yards y-o-y and China's major 10 builders took 47.7% of all deliveries in China, having delivered 36.54m dwt last year. Secondly, high-value vessel contracted increased as market changed, for instance, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding booked four 172,000-cbm LNG carriers and 4+2 10,000-teu boxships, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding and DSIC successfully contracted 25 10,000-teu containerships and 4+2 10,000-teu, respectively. Thirdly, Chinese builders put efforts in research and development of high-value vessels. Hudong-Zhonghua self-developed four different sizes of LNG carrier and contracted China's first export LNG carrier for Exxonmobil-MOL LNG project. Fourthly, China saw M& As increasing, for instance, Yangzijiang took over stakes of two yards and Weichai Group took over Ferretti Group, Yangzijiang and Hantong bought ship design firm CS Marine Technology (CSMT) of Singapore and a German design company each. Fifthly, China is dealing with current crisis well, making improvement on quality and production efficiency to overcome dropping newbuilding price and increasing cost, etc. Sixthly, China also entered offshore sector and strategized to make development. Chinese government backed up offshore sector, with its 'Medium-and-long term plan for offshore facilities construction', '2011-2020 strategic plan for innovation and development of offshore facilities', etc. With support from the government, Chinese builders took about 10% of world offshore facility market with a total of 18 units worth $5bn. SWS contracted deep-sea semi-submersible drilling platform, DSIC won jack-up rig, Rongsheng deep-sea pipe layer, etc. Published : January 27, 2012

The Chinese shipbuilder has teamed up with Germany’s Peter Dohle to jointly operate four post-panamax bulk carriers that are to hit the water during the current quarter. AM Fraser says the decision could eventually prove a lucrative one with post-panamax values set to bounce within a couple of years. And it adds that forging closer ties with partners could lead to bigger orders in the future. The 92,500-dwt quartet was originally ordered by the Hamburg-based owner before it decided to swap them for a series of eight containerships last year. Analyst Lee Yue Jer explains in a note: “When YZJ helped Peter Dohle change their initial order from bulkers to containerships, the engines that had already been ordered could not be used nor returned. “Instead of writing the valuable equipment off, YZJ decided to build the bulkers and enter into a JV with Peter Dohle for their operation.
