STI to cross 3000 boosted by long-term investors

Singapore shares may open higher on Monday, after positive consumer sentiment and new home sales data in the US helped to push the S& P 500 to its highest level in four years.

The benchmark Straits Times Index rose 0.33% on Friday to 2,978.08 points. Here are some stocks and factors to watch, according to Reuters:

Singapore property and hotel firm UOL Group may be in focus after it posted on Friday a 12% drop in full-year net profit, mainly due to higher taxes and lower fair value gains, and said it was cautious about prospects in 2012.

Palm oil firm First Resources said its fourth quarter net profit rose 10.4% to US$77.8 million ($97.8 million) from a year ago, driven by higher palm oil prices and sales volumes.

Property firm SC Global said it booked a net loss of $18.6 million for the three months ended December, compared to a net profit of $45.3 million a year ago, hurt by lower property sales.

Venture said its fourth quarter net profit fell 30% to $38 million from $54.2 million a year ago, weighed by lower sales.

A few days ago, before the latest breakout in crude sent Brent to all time highs in GBP and EUR (and Asian Tapis in USD just shy of all time highs), we said that " we hope our readers stocked up on gasoline. Because things are about to get uglier. And by that we mean more expensive. But courtesy of hedonic adjustments, more expensive means cheaper, at least to the US government." This was due to recent news out of Iran " where on one hand we learn that IAEA just pronounced Iran nuclear talks a failure (this is bad), and on the other Press TV reports that the Iran army just started a 4 day air defense exercise in a 190,000 square kilometer area in southern Iran (this is just as bad). The escalation " ball" is now in the Western court." We were not surprised to learn that the " Western court" has responded in precisely the way we had expected. The WSJ reports: " The Pentagon is beefing up U.S. sea- and land-based defenses in the Persian Gulf to counter any attempt by Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. military has notified Congress of plans to preposition new mine-detection and clearing equipment and expand surveillance capabilities in and around the strait... The military also wants to quickly modify weapons systems on ships so they could be used against Iranian fast-attack boats, as well as shore-launched cruise missiles" Which means the escalation slider was just shifted up by one more level, as Iran will next do just what every actor caught in an Always Defect regime as part of an iterated prisoners' dilemma always does - step up the rhetoric even more, as backing off at this point is impossible. Which means that crude will go that much more higher in the coming days, as now even the MSM is starting to grasp the obvious - from the Guardian: " The drumbeat of war with Iran grows steadily more intense. Each day brings more defiant rhetoric from Tehran, another failed UN nuclear inspection, reports of western military preparations, an assassination, a missile test, or a dire warning that, once again, the world is sliding towards catastrophe. If this all feels familiar, that's because it is. For Iran, read Iraq in the countdown to the 2003 invasion." And the most ironic thing is that the biggest loser out of all this, at least in the short-term is.... Greece.

(Reuters) - Germany is easing its opposition to a bigger Euro bailout fund, smoothing the way for the world's leading economies to secure nearly $2 trillion (1.25 trillion pounds) in firepower to prevent further fallout from the euro-zone's sovereign debt crisis.

Mexico City: This weekend meeting, finance leaders from Grp of 20 are trying to build up massive international resources by the end of April to convince financial mkts they can prevent the euro-zone's deep problems from inflicting more damage on a still-fragile world recovery.

Since 2008 when the G20 mustered $1 trillion to rescue the world economy from the credit crisis, which blew up in the U.S. and caused the worst recession since the 1930s. It would mark their boldest efforts.

They are demanding Euro build up its war chest 1st and other G20 countries would contribute extra money to the IMF. As Europe's richest economy, Germany's support for a larger European fund is critical.

Bigger Euro fund is a condition for major non-European economies before they lend more money to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to provide an even bigger wall of cash to fight the crisis that has already claimed three euro debtor countries and now threatens the much bigger economies of Italy and Spain.

" I would not bet on a positive outcome by the end of the March 1-2 summit," one euro zone official said. " German opposition to a deal is still very strong."

Euro zone leaders are set to review the 500 billion euro ($675 billion) limit on the joint lending capacity of their temporary and permanent bailout funds, known by their acronyms EFSF and ESM, at the March 1-2 summit.

In last week, STI lost 23 points from the opening of 3001 and close higher at 2978. A black candle sticks with short lower shadow indicate that bears have begun to short the market.

Key Economics Data report:

In the past week, tensions surrounding the sanctions on Iran put pressure on oil prices, sending to US$109.77 per barrel, a gain of nearly 6 percent. Higher oil prices will affect the stock market on a continuous basis and it will help companies that get profits from higher oil prices and it’s going to hurt companies that depend on domestic demand.

Technical Analysis on STI

STI index has failed to break the critical resistance at 3005 and begun to pullback in this week.

1) In weekly chart, a black candle sticks with short lower shadow which affirms on the profit taking on the overbought market.

2) The weekly trading volume gain slightly as investors en-cash their stocks on recent gain.

3) MACD and RSI indicators are flat as RSI trend sideways.

4) STI is currently supported by the major support at 2936

5) The major resistance at 3005 is likely to cause a lot of issues to the bulls.

US Data Could Drive Stocks Higher Amid Oil and Europe Risks

Stocks face the challenge of rising oil prices and headline risk from Europe, but it could end up being the fresh economic reports on U.S. manufacturing and the consumer that drive markets in the week ahead.

The Dow, in the past week, crossed the 13,000 mark for the first time since 2008 but failed to close above it. Stocks were up slightly, with the Dow up 0.3 percent for the week at 12,982. The S& P 500 was also 0.3 percent higher at 1365, finishing above its 2011 closing high of 1363 for the first time Friday but failing to break through its 2011 intraday high of 1370.

“I think the big round numbers are putting up a little resistance here. I know it’s the consensus, but I think we are due for a pull back. It’s more likely we’ll see (S& P) 1300 before we see 1400 and that to me would be healthy,” said Andrew Burkly, director of Brown Brothers equity strategy research.

Data in the coming week includes auto sales, chain store sales and ISM manufacturing data. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke also gives his semiannual testimony on monetary policy to Congress, starting before the House Financial Services committee Wednesday.

“Some of the elements of the thesis on what is causing the current rally in risk assets will come into play in the next week, and that would include reinvigorated manufacturing” said Tony Crescenzi, portfolio manager and market strategist at Pimco. “The apparent pickup in labor demand is also fueling risk assets.”

Jobless claims, improved for a fifth week this past week, will also be an important indicator when reported Thursday. The February employment report will be released March 8, a week later than the usual first Friday of the month release date.

“Bernanke is likely to be hesitant to embrace the improvements in the economy,” said Crescenzi. He also expects him to be noncommittal about another round of quantitative easing, which Fed members have said is possible if the economy needs it.

Crescenzi said the bond market will be highly focused on Bernanke. Historically, the semiannual Fed testimony has resulted in an 8 bps move either way in the long bond, but Bernanke’s testimony typically moves it less than past Fed chairmen because of the Fed’s efforts to be more transparent, he said. “There’s a slight risk (to the bond market) that he says something slightly more optimistic,” Crescenzi said.

SINGAPORE – Electronics manufacturing services provider Venture Corp. reported fourth-quarter 2011 revenue of S$632.5 million, down 10.3% year-over-year and up 8.4% sequentially.

Fourth-quarter net profit was S$38 million, down 30% year-over-year and up 7.3% sequentially.

Full-year 2011 sales were S$2.4 billion, down 9.1% year-over-year.

The firm attributes the decline to the depreciation of the Singapore dollar.

2011 net profit was S$156.5 million, down 16.8% compared to 2010.

The company closed 2011 with net cash of S$309.1 million.

Venture anticipates improved traction with several customers in 2012, but is cognizant of the uncertainty of the global economy.

" Govt can take on as much debt as it likes ($5.0 trillion and counting since President Obama took office), central bank can increase the money supply as much it wants (an increase of about $2.0 trillion since the credit crisis began). But too much debt and too much money printing always lead to rapid inflation and higher interest rates.
