eh well. i'm almost certain i'll emigrate. after my experience in a govt job here....total personality misfit with this country. >~< will see how it goes... but certainly i do not intend to retire in singapore. the pace, the rudeness of the people, the constriction of this society...it is not worth it. Plus, how many singaporeans are born singaporean now anyway? Those who can leave have left or are planning to go; who's left? the poor and the wealthy elite. Plus a lot of foreign talent in. Doesn't seem to be any place for the singaporean who's not in either class. |

Many of my friends have migrated to Australia. It seems that life is good there. One big problem there is the very high income tax. I think the standard of the government is not so efficient. But overall quality of life is still pretty good for those who wants a slower pace of life. |

i like s'pore, i voted for PAP all this while. s'pore will get only more costly to live, the income gap will get bigger over the years especially after the IR is up, you can expect to see more wealthy people to come here to spend on luxury goods & up-class restaurants etc. i live in the east and work in the west, car depreciation, insurance, road tax/petrol/ERP esaily cost me more than $2k/month, kids, parents/in-law etc, so the monthly expenses definitely will add up to $7-8k/month. yes, agreed that it is the life-style that you choose to have, but if i dont have a car, how to commute between home & office when my working hour is like 8am-8pm? the middle income will find that they will not have much saving probably till the kids finish the education, gov knows that too. |

I don't mind to live in Shanghai (China) or Mombai (India)!!!!!!! BTW jasonfaxingliu, how to you compare our std of living and with which cities. If it is London, New York, Paris, Tokyo .....I do agree with you!!!! Cost of living is due to inflations which is happening around the world and the environment is a global concern and there is not much Singapore could do. Social manner is the responsibilty of the Society as a whole. The Govt can't change the bad social habits of its population - they can only deter!!!!!!! Cheers! |

Frankly, we've to downgrade ourselves and live like people in India or China. Compare their earning against cost of living, Singapore is still not too bad. Since it is easier for the government and private company to employ foreign Engineers, Doctors.. from overseas for 1/2 of Singaporean's pay, can we demand for more ??!! With the vision of 6.5 million population in Singapore, Singaporean will be overwhelm by foreigners. Our standard of living lower, cost of living rising, environment deteriorate, social manner worsen... |

Oh yes! You've reminded me that there're this few whom I came across it those days that can'y survive financially b'cos they chose to eat canteen food and 'stay-out' thus, incur extra cost. So it's their choice, their way of spending their own $ - right? Ultimately, this is a "the govt dun owe anyone a living" kind of society. The choice is yours to be made. |

oh well, i know how i survived back in NS days cos govt provide me free food and lodging.. and we hardly have to travel frequently incurring transportation expenses..and i doubt i can get it now anyway.. so how can you compare orange (NS days) to apple (working life). do you know how much it cost to have lunch in city area? and the cost of taking public transport from home to work everyday?? anyway the few hundreds buck they give is jus temporary relief of our pain.. and in the long run.. we will pay back them more in terms of high and more ERPs.. and other hikes... |

Sometimes, I wonder how my Muslim neighbor of 7 in a family survive with their father as a sole bread winner earning a take home pay of ~ $1.5k and yet can be so happy every other day especially since the budget has been announced? I believe it all boils down to self contentment. Think of how you've survive your NS days(if you're S'poreans male) with only the allowance instead of actual salary. U'll know what I meant. B'cos in those days, the emphasis is not $$ anymore, its.....FREEDOM! |

It is your points of view and there is no wrong or right 'cos that's how you see it! As I've pointed out, the gap between the rich, the middle class and poor became wider was due to the booming economy and the demand of top earners. Either you pay more or they go elsewhere - simple as that! If the Govt try to CAP the wages of these professionals, S'pore not only will lose out to become a Financial Centre; but also lots of Good People! As for the poor, the Govt is trying not to create a dependency which could result many social problems. Therefore, a careful balanced budget would be the only way (though not the best) to go. It is very difficult for the Govt to please everybody in each budget. I think our Govt has done very well, indeed! Cheers! |

what is gov's definition as middle income? most of friends (with 2-3 schooling kids) all said that they need $7k-8k (with a car) monthly expenses to cover everything, especially these days kids' education take up quite a fair amount ever month |

Yes, I fully agree with you that there is no nation with no income disparity and the rich willl benefit more than the poor during growing economy. Its the fact and no doubt for that but wat I wan to say is that I dun see any action by the controlling people to make sure that the gap dun wider that much or ensuring a more even income distribution. Wat they are doing are making the situation worse instead of better. That's wat i am trying to say. Please correct me if i m wrong. :) |

I don't agree that the Govt is making the Richs, richer or the Poors, poorer. In any economy, the Richs will always have an advantage over the Poors due to the available of resources at different level which could never be equal. In a growing economy, the Richs will become richer and the Poors will too become richer - the only different is the size of the gains which again is due to the level of the economy and the sectors you're in. In this world, there isn't such a thing as FREE LUNCH! Just show me one Nation that have no Income Gap, and I'll show the BIGGEST LIAR! Cheers! |
