STI obviously doesn't follow the European market trend upwards although some small cap stock do very well. Some large cap stock like banks (especially UOB), SingTel and SIA are dragging the index lower. Don't think cease fire has any impact on Singapore or overeseas markets today because nobody knows whether it will be kept. |

EUROPE MARKETS The U.K. FTSE 100 index (UK:UKX: news, chart, profile) added 0.6% at 5,854, the German DAX Xetra 30 index (DX:1876534: news, chart, profile) rose 0.8% at 5,675 and the French CAC-40 index (FR:1804546: news, chart, profile) increased 0.8% at 5,027.
The pan-European Dow Jones Stoxx 600 index (ST:SXXP: news, chart, profile) advanced 0.5% at 326 points on broad-based gains across the sectors.
The euro eased 0.1% at $1.2716 against the dollar.
The index gains were helped by oil prices sliding 92 cents to $73.43 a barrel in electronic trade after a United Nations cease-fire between Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah went into effect at 1 a.m. U.S. Eastern Time, easing recent political tension in the Middle East.
Media reports say the truce is the first step toward the U.N. and the Lebanese army deploying along the Israeli-Lebanon border.
Oil also was lower as BP said on Friday that it will pump 200,000 barrels of oil a day from the Prudhoe Bay field in Alaska during repairs; BP had initially said it would shut the entire 400,000 barrels a day field.

But if you see below London terror news (NY time 1.38am/S'pore 1.38pm), the arrests happened early Thursday London.
STI was almost flat when it broke for lunch (12.30 - 2pm) after staying down all morning. I was anticipating a push up after lunch, but I guess the London terror arrests spoiled it for all. STI dived after 3pm local time.
We had watched out for the Fed's rate, oil price, bird flu .... but we had forgotten the terror factor. Sigh!

As mentioned earlier. According to OCBC research, STI was down for 12 of the past 16 years after National Day. I know you guys are patriotic, but there's no post-National Day rally this year. |

Britain is on maximum terror alert after a bomb plot was foiled. British police said Thursday that they had foiled a plot to blow up planes flying between Britain and the United States, and put the country on its highest state of alert for terror attacks. Home Secretary John Reid said the plot was "very significant" and designed to "bring down a number of aircraft through mid-flight explosions, causing a considerable loss of life." Scotland Yard believed it to "be a major threat to the UK and international partners," Reid added, referring to the headquarters of London's Metropolitan Police. The United States ordered its highest state of alert Thursday for US-bound planes from Britain. The US Department of Homeland Security also said it had raised the alert to the second-highest level for all other commercial aircraft. European markets are down. STI is following. |
