One more day to CSM's Q3 results .... AMD's Q3 (beow) looks pretty positive on CSM in terms of chip sales. But the American's price war affect CSM margin too! -------------------- But AMD shares fell more than 12% in late trading as the company also reported lower profit margins and average selling prices for its chips, signaling to some investors that rival Intel Corp.'s counter-attack may be taking its toll.
AMD, the world's No. 2 maker of computer chips, said net income was $134.5 million, or 27 cents a share, up from $76 million, or 18 cents a share, in the same period last year.
For the three months ended Oct. 1, sales dipped to $1.33 billion from $1.5 billion. Last year's quarter included $516 million in revenue from its now-divested Spansion memory-chip unit. Excluding Spansion sales, AMD revenue rose 33% from a year ago.
Analysts polled by Thomson First Call expected AMD to report earnings of 24 cents a share and revenue of $1.3 billion.
Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD is a more formidable competitor to Intel Corp. than in years past. It's boosted its market share of PC and server chips and picked up business at Dell Inc., once an Intel-only customer, and from Lenovo Group, the world's No. 3 personal-computer maker that bought IBM's PC unit last year.
Still, most analysts think AMD's share gains against Intel will slow as Intel has revamped its product line and cut prices. The chipmakers have been locked in a processor price battle the past six months.
In the recent quarter, AMD said its desktop PC chips sales were flat with the quarter ended July 2 and said it was hurt by lower average selling prices.
AMD said its gross profit margin, a key metric for chip firms, fell to 51.4% of sales versus 55.4% in the same quarter last year.
The gross margin decline "probably surprised some people," said American Technology Research analyst Doug Freedman, who rates AMD and Intel shares a buy. In addition, he thinks Intel took back some share from AMD, likely in the desktop market.
AMD shares fell $3.08 to $21.15 in late trading.

It is expected to report on Friday that net profit for the third quarter was probably flat from the previous three months as customers cut inventory amid an uncertain demand outlook but analysts are hoping increased production by key client AMD will support recovery in the last quarter of the year. Analysts polled by XFN-Asia are looking at net income of between US$10.5m and US$12.6m for the three months to September, compared to US$12.32m recorded in the previous quarter. Including the accretion to the redemption value of convertible redeemable preferred shares of US$2.36m, Chartered said second-quarter net income available to common shareholders was US$9.97m. Chartered also projected sales to come in at US$356-368m in the September quarter, up from US$290.13m in the same period last year, but nearly flat from the US$364.83m it made in the second quarter. Chartered has said that its customers have been cautious about their inventory positions given the softer-than-usual demand in some of the end markets. "It is flattish sequentially but may recover in the fourth quarter on account of AMD's orders," said UOB Kay Hian analyst Jonathan Koh who is looking at third-quarter net profit of US$12.6m. Koh said capacity utilization at Chartered probably fell to 75% in the third quarter from 82% in the previous three months, reflecting weak orders from IBM for the Xbox 360 console. Chartered, in partnership with IBM, supplies the chips used in Xbox 360 demand for which has slowed. "We expect third-quarter net income to be in line with guidance as volume decline for Xbox 360 is offset by ramp up in production for AMD," said CIMB-GK Research analyst Khoo Chen Hsung. Khoo sees net profit for the September quarter dropping from April-June to US$10.5m. But Khoo believes the last quarter of the year would see Chartered's earnings rebound, supported by orders from AMD and Infineon Technologies. "We think the market will be watching its fourth quarter guidance very keenly," OCBC Investment Research analyst Carey Wong said, after projecting net profit of US$11.6m for the three months to September on sales of US$363.4m. In particular, AMD will be key to Chartered's growth especially when the computer central processing unit maker shifts to 65-nm chips next year from the 90-nm technology, Wong said, although that may not be enough to counter the weak Xbox 360 business with IBM. "Still, even if the fourth quarter performance remains tepid, we expect the outlook to improve by the second quarter of 2007," he said. Without providing a net profit forecast, Merrill Lynch said it expects Chartered to post third-quarter sales of US$364m and will likely say it sees flat revenue in the fourth quarter. "Chartered should fare reasonably well in the fourth quarter due to its 300 mm production ramp-up. At 300 mm, orders from IBM and AMD appear to be slightly up. This should result in flat revenue growth," Merrill Lynch said in a note to clients. |

AMD's Q3 out tonight at 12am will affect CSM's performance tomorrow as the latter produces chips for the former. Yesterday, Intel's reported its Q3 (see below). CSM's Q3 is expected to be 'flat' as previously guided last month. Hope it will spring some surprises this Friday morning On long terms, its collaboration with IBM will be exciting & rewarding. Trade with care ya! --------------------- But results from the world's largest maker of computer chips topped Wall Street's views, signaling Intel may be recovering from its stumbles the past few quarters. In late trading, Intel shares rose 1.4% to $21.20.
Intel said net income was $1.3 billion, or 22 cents a share, down from $2 billion, or 32 cents, in last year's same period. For the three month period ended Sept. 30, sales fell 12% to $8.7 billion. The results beat Wall Street's expectations. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call expected the company to post earnings of 18 cents a share on revenue of $8.62 billion.
Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel has been shipping new PC and server chips in a bid to strengthen its product line-up, especially in the server market, where AMD has made dramatic market share gains the past two years. Intel said it shipped more than 6 million processors based on its new Core microarchitecture.

Chartered is certainly on uptrend now. Just see it performance over Nasdaq & yesterday too, past few days closed near its day high....good enough indication to me and not just looking at RSI chart. Any sign of good news coming from Chartered always spotted first by foreign analyst as ...The rest will follow. Just watch and see... |

CIMB-GK has upgraded its rating on to "outperform" from "underperform" with a target price of $1.36. "Chartered is positioned for strong earnings growth from customer ramps. It has begun ramping production for AMD at the 90-nm node in the third quarter and is scheduled to begin 65-nm production for several new customers in 2007," CIMB-GK said in a note to clients. "Ensuing volume growth and shift towards higher margin advanced nodes is set to boost earnings," it said. CIMB-GK expects 3Q net profit to be in line with the company's guidance at US$10.5m. |

CSFB lowered its rating on Chartered to "neutral" from "outperform" but maintained its $1.35 share price target.
The brokerage said the stock now reflects Chartered becoming more competitive with its IBM, Infineon, Samsung development partnership and building its leading-edge customer base. Chartered's stock has rebounded 22% over the past month vs 10% for the foundry average, the CSFB research note said. |
